WALTER 'W'. BRAIDBURY, 0F SALEM, IVIASSAOHUSETTS- ASSIGNOR TO UNITED SHOE IWACI-IINERY CORPORATION, OF PATERSON, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
HORN-TIP FOR MCKAY SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 26, 1920.
Application filed November 19, 1918. Serial'No. 263,188.
7 '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, l/VALTER V. BRAD- BURY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salem, in the county of Essex and State of NIZLSSELChUSGtlZS, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horn- Tips for McKay Sewing-hlaehines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to horn tips for use in sewing machines of the so called McKay type. The object of the invention is to provide a horn tip the parts of which are of simple construction, so formed that they can be assembled readily, quickly and accurate] y and when assembled will form a housing for the whirl and prevent the wax from the thread working between the parts of the tip to the outside where it would be liable to be wiped upon the lining of a shoe.
lVith the above object in view, the present invention contemplates the provision, in a horn tip comprising a whirl supporting block and a cap, of a cylindrical rib projecting from the lower surface of the cap into the whirl receiving hole of the whirl supporting block. This cylindrical rib forms a tight joint between the cap and the whirl supporting block which effectually prevents the escape of wax between the surfaces of the cap and block to the outside of the horn tip and at the same time furnishes a guide in assembling the parts whereby the needle hole in the cap is accurately centered with certainty directly above the center of the whirl, and any displacement of the cap with relation to the whirl is prevented in case the screws which secure the cap in place become loosened in use.
The present invention will be clearly understood from an inspection of the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a horn tip embodying the invention in its preferred form; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the parts illustrated in Fi 1- Fi 3 is a lon itudinal sectional g a a view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. a is a detail perspective view of the cap showing particularly the cylindrical projecting rib which surrounds the needle hole.
The horn tip illustrated in the drawings comprises the whirl receiving block 1 and the cap 2. The block 1 is provided with plane upper surfaces arranged at an angle to each other as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, and the cap 2 is provided with corresponding plane under surfaces fitting against the upper surfaces of the block. A tubular stem 3 projects downwardly from the main portion of the block 1 which is adapted to be received in a socket in the upper end of the horn of the machine on which the horn tip is used. To receive the whirl the upper forward end of the block 1 is provided with a counterbored hole 4 the axis of which is at right angles to the upper surface of the block. A. passage-way 5 extends through the block 1, and its stem 3 and is adapted to re :eive the upper portion of a whirl driving shaft. A. screw 6 passing through the cap and engaging the block serves to secure the cap and block together. To enable the cap and block to be secured to the horn of a sewing machine the lower end of the cap is provided with a countersunk screw opening 7.
The cap 2 is provided with a needle hole 8, and to enable the cap and block 1 to be quickly and easily assembled withthe needle hole 8 accurately located in the correct position above the whirl receiving hole 4:, the cap 2 is provided with a cylindrical rib or flange 9 projecting from the lower surface of the cap which rib is concentric with the needle hole 8 and is adapted to enter the counterbored portion of the whirl receiving hole 1. The rib 9 accurately positions the cap on the block and effectually prevents any accidental displacement of the cap even if the screw 6 and the screw passing through the aperture 7 become loose. Also the rib 9 acts to prevent the escape of any wax from the whirl between the surfaces of the block and the cap and to the outside of the horn tip.
The nature and scope of the invention having been indicated, and a preferred form of the invention having been specifically de scribed, What is claimed is:
A horn tip for McKay sewing machines having, in combination, a Whirl supporting block provided With a plane upper surface and with a counterbored hole to receive the whirl, and a cap provided with a plane under surface fitting against the upper surface of said block and also provided With a needle aperture and with a cylindrical rib WALTER W. BRADBURY.
