invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pumps, ofwhich the following is a specification.
My invention relates to devices including a cylinder and a manually actuated reciprocating plunger which for'convenience of description I refer to as pumps and which find their duplicate, so far as construction is concerned, in grease and oil guns and the like. In devices of this character the cylinder is generally'connected at least at one end with a base or its equivalent in the form of caps or the like, by means of screwthreads which constitute a relatively high priced and unsatisfactory connection. The object of my invention is to provide a novel arrangement whereby the cylinder and the ease or its equivalent are connected in a simple and efficient manner and whereby the cost of production is materially reduced. My i1 .ention will be fully described hereinf n and its features of novelty will be pointed out in the appended claim.
For the purpose of illustrating the invention and without intending to define its limits. T have shown a specific embodiment of th invention applied to a pump of the type commonly usedfor inflating pneumatic tires. in said drawings, Figure 1 is an ele vation of the pump, partly in section; Figs. and 3 are detail sectional views showing the pump at different stages of its development; Fig. 4 is a cross-section thereof on the line i -at of Fig. 1; and Figs. 5 and 6 in the illustrated example, 5 represents the cylinder or barrel of a conventional hand pump and (5 designates the piston or plunger carried by the stem 7 and reciprocable in said cylinder 5 by means of the handle 8 or its equivalent. It will be understood that the pump includes the customary inlet and discharge connections and that these have not been shown in detail as they form no part of the present invention; the discharge port is indicated at 5* in Fig. 1.. The one end of the cylinder 5 projects into tubular neck 9 of the base 10 and is formed with an enlargement 11 which fits within a complemental recess 12 comprising a continuation ofthe axial bore 13 of the neck 9. lViththis arrangement cooperating an nular shoulders 1-1 and 15 are provided respectively in the neck 9 and on the cylinder- 5 and serve to prevent separation of the latter from the base 10 in anaxial direction. The locking element whereby the cylinder 5 and neck 9 are locked positively together against relative rotation or other relative movement comprises a disk or washer 16 which snugly fits within the enlargement 11 and lies against the olosedinner end of the neck 9.
'The base 10 with the neck 9 and its axial bore 13 and continuing recess 12 may be produced in any suitable manner as by casting, it being understood that the diameter of the bore 13 is such as to snugly fit about the cylinder 5 when the latter is connected. with the base 10.
To combine the cylinder 5 and the base 10 the one end of said cylinder is inserted into the bore 13 and moved axially thereof to the position illustrated in Fig. 2. By means of suitable mechanism the end of the cylinder 5 is expanded into the recess 12 until it firmly engages the wall of the latter, and to form the shoulder H in firm surface engagement with the shoulder 15 as shown in Fig. 3. After this has been done, the locking disk or washer 16 which at this stage is dished, as illustrated in Fig. 6 and of a diameter to readily pass through the cylinder 5 is dropped into the recess 12 within the enlargement 11 as indicated in Fig. 3. As a final step this dished disk or washer 16 is flattened out in any suitable manner so that its periphery engages the inner surface of the enlargement 11 and maintains it securely in position therein as shown in Fig. 1. It will be understood that the dimensions of the disk or washer 16 are so computed that in its fully flattened condition it will itself be rigidly secured within the enlargement 11 andwill exert a clamping force in directions transverse to its axis whereby the cylinder end and neck 9 are rigidly fastened together against relative movement in all directions including rotation.
The device is simple and easy to fabricate and requires no expensive treatment of the elements to effect a connection; at the same vice; it will be understood however that the elements of the illustrated embodiment find their duplicates in grease and oil guns and kindred devices and that the invention is equally well adapted to such devices.
Various changes in the specific form. shown and described may be made within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim:
In a pump, the combination of a base, a neck projecting from said base and provided with an axial bore and a continuing recess of larger diameter whereby an annular shoulder is formed between said bore and recess, a pump cylinder fitted within said bore, an annular shoulder forming 'a continuation of said cylinder and fitted against the annular shoulder of said neck, an enlargement forming a continuation of said cylinder shoulder and fitted within said recess and a disk within said enlargement effective in directions transverse to the axis of said cylinder to clamp the enlargement against the wall of said recess.
