IMPROVEMENT IN lRONlNG APPARATUS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent 1:10. 135,606, dated February 4, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known'that I, ELISHA SUMPTION, of South Bend, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Ironing Apparatus for Smoothing Clothes, of which the following is a specification:
Description of the Accompanying Drawing. Figure 1 is a side elevation as it appears when in operation; Fig. 2 is the table-frame, showing the friction-wheels, with the coveror T ironing-board detached. Fig. 3 is a side ele- 'in diameter, and one and a fourth inch on the face, on each side of which is attached a small pulley, b, all working on a common axle. In the face of said wheel are out two grooves to receive the cords c and 01. These cords are attached at one end in the grooves in the face of the wheel B atthe points marked 1 and 2, while the other ends are attached to the horizontal pitman e at the pointsmarked 3 and 4. These cords pass around the wheel B in opposite directions, and pass each other at the top. The cords f f are attached, one end in a groove in the pulley b on each side of the wheel B, and the other ends to the pedals g g which are fastened in the standard '8, shown in Fig. 5, and pass through straddle of the standard j, shown in Fig. 4, under the table, to the position of the operator; and said stand;- ards are held in position by the two side pieces h h, in which the axle of the wheel B works, and which connect said standards with the. table A by means of iron or other metallic hooks. O is the smoothing-iron, tapering to a point at both ends, so that it will pass over the clothes tov be smoothed as well in one direction as another. The horizontal pitman E rests upon the face of the wheel B, and is, at one end, attached to the smoothing-iron G, and is worked back and forth by the action of the operator on the pedals g g, and thus giving the necessary motion to the smoothing-iron} while both hands of the operator are free to move the table-cover or ironing-board and adjust theclothing thereon as desired; and when not in use the iron is by the same process drawn back and made to rest upon a small pedestal on a plane with or a little higher than the table.
Claim.
I claim as my invention- The combination of the table A, the top movable on friction-rollers, with side pieces h and standards 'i j, the treadles g, cords f, wheel B, the 'pitman E, and the smoothing-iron O, as and for the purpose specified.
ELISHA SUMPTION.
