A. SCHROEDER.
CLOSURE FOR METAL CONTAINERS. APPLICATION FILED JUNE 29. 1920.

UNITED STAT ANTHONY S'CI-IROEDER, 0F CLEVELAND, OHIO.
CLOSURE FOR METAL CONTAINERS.
Original application filed October 30, 1919, Serial No. 334,553. Divide 29, 1920. Serial N0. 392,736.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTHONY SoHRoEnER,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Closures for Metal Containers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to closures for metal containers and barrels of that type designed for the transportation of substances which should be sealed against leakage or against the atmosphere. This application is a division of my pending application, Serial No. 334,553, filed October 30, 1919. Y
The object of the present invention is to provide a closure with improved means for fastening the same in place, said means permitting the cover to be removed and resealed after use, and it embodies improved means for retaining the cover in place by means of ears some of which are located on the head and some of which are located on thecover, and these are arranged alternately so that the ears on one of the parts may be bent over between the ears on the other part.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a top view of a package provided with the closure. Fig. 2 is a detail in section.
The container comprises a cylindrical drum or body 1 of sheet metal, to which is secured a head or end indicated at 2 by means of the joint 3 which is formed by an annular bead at the end of the drum 1 which interlocks with an annular hooked bead on the head 2, and thereby forming a tight joint.
The head or end has a circular opening at i to receive the closure, the edge around the opening being provided with an upturned flange 5 which is inclined slightly outwardly or laterally and terminates in a plurality of spaced ears or projections 6.
The cover 7 is of proper size to fit within Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 19, 1920.
d and this application filed June the flange and the opening in the head, and is itself provided with an inclined flange 8 extending outwardly and terminating in a plurality of ears or projections 9 which equal in number the spaces between the ears 6, and when in position occupy alternate positions with respect to said ears.
The cover is inserted in position with the ears extending parallel to t e flanges, and after it is set in place the ears 6 on the flange of the head are bent over inwardly upon the flange 8 of the cover, and the ears on the cover are bent over outwardly beside or upon the flange 5. This locks the cover in place and prevents it from being dislodged either inwardly or outwardly except by bending both sets of ears back to original position, permitting the cover to be slipped out. The cover may be reinserted and locked several times by the means described. The whole forms a very simple and effective means for holding a cover in place on a container of the kind described.
I claim The combination with a barrel having an annular head the outer edge of which is secured to the side wall of the barrel and the inner edge of which is provided around the opening in the head with a flange extending outwardly at an angle to the head, said flange terminating in a series of spaced outturned projections, a cover having a flange provided with a series of out-turned projections fitting between the said. projections, said cover adapted to engage and fit within the flange around said opening, the projections around the opening. being turned over and pressed against the flange of the cover to hold the cover tightly in place.
In testimony whereof I do afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
I ANTHONY SCHROEDER. Witnesses J orm A. BOMMHARDT, a WM. C. Lovm'r. j
