Description
c. F. KORN. COMBINED COMPASS AND CLOCK.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 3, 1920.
1,355,343, I Patented Oct. 12, 1920.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHESTER F. KORN, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
COMBINED COMPASS AND GLOCK..
Application filed May 3, 1920.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Cnnsrnn F. KonN, a citizen of the United States, and residlng at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined Compasses and Clocks, 01" which the following specification is a full disclosure.
This invention relates to a combined compass and clock for use on the dash of motor driven vehicles, or the like, and has for its objects to provide a structure wherein the clock and compass are inclosed in a single casing, and wherein the entire combination may be swung to and held in a horizontal position to set the compass for purposes of orientation.
Additional objects and certain advantages will be disclosed in the description and special reference is made to the drawings forming a part of this specification, in which:
Figure 1 is a sectional view through a dash showing my device mounted thereon for use as a clock, and showing in dot-anddash lines its position for use as a compass.
Fig. 2 is a face view of the clock side of my device, viewed at right angles to the face 01 the dash.
Fig. 3 is a plan section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, showing the device in position for use as a compass.
The numeral 1 designates the dash, 2 a square opening therein, 3 my combined compass and clock casing, a the clock and 5 the compass. A cover 6 is hinged as at 7 to the casing 8, and the cover is provided at its center with a square opening 8 for the reception of a'fastening bolt 9, squared as at 10, to engage the walls of the squared opening 2 of the dash 1, to prevent rotation of the cover 6 and its attached casing 3, and the said bolt is provided with a clamping nut 11, as shown.
As disclosed in Fig. 1, the casing is provided with the usual latch 12, operated by Specification of Letters I'atent.
Patented Oct. 12, 1920.
Serial No.-378,349.
the winding stem 13, in the ordinary manner, to fasten and release the cover 6.
In the position of the device, shown in Fig. 1, the same is set for use as a clock, the compass 5 being inclosed by the cover 6. When it is desired to use the compass, the latch 12 is released and the casing swung to the position shown by the dot-and-dash lines, in which position the portion i l of the casing abuts the dash I to prevent further movement.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a base, a casing having a hinged cover, the said cover being attached to said base, a clock and compass mounted within said casing, and means for releasing said cover from said casing to bring said compass to position for orientation.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a base, a casing having a hinged cover, the said cover being attached to said base, a clock and compass mounted within said casing, and means for releasing said cover from said casing to bring said compass to position for orientation, the said base forming a stop to limit the movement of said casing at a horizontal position.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination of a base, a casing having a hinged cover, the said cover being attached to said base, a clock and compass mounted back to back in said casing, means for releasing and locking said cover with respect to said casing, and means for limiting the movement of said casing at a horizontal position.
In witness whereof I hereunto subscribe my name, as attested by the two subscribing witnesses.
CHESTER F. KORN.
Witnesses FRANCIS E. ALDEN, L. A. BECK.
