AM mora-urmmmc co m: (oaaoms's macsas) UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH TOMLINSON, OF ONSLOW, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOLT-CUTTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,497, dated February 4, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH TOMLLINSON, of Onslow, in the county of J ones and State'ot' Iowa, have invented a newand Improved Bolt- Gutter, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a side view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a new and very simple bolt-cutter, in which a sliding jaw is used under a fixed jaw, somewhat in the style of a monkey-wrench.
The invention consists chiefly, in providing such an instrument with cutters that have L-shaped blades, so that they may be used to cut from either side, and can be applied in positions in which ordinary bolt-cutters cannot be used. The invention also consists in the combination of parts used in completing the in strument, ashereinafter more fully described.
A in the drawing represents the shank or handle of myimproved bolt-cutter. It has at the upper end a projecting jaw or arm, a, to the under side of which the stationary cutter Bis secured. C is a slide, up and down adj ustable on the shank A, and embracing the same by means of straps b b. To the upper end of the slide 0 is fastened the movable cutter D, which is directly under and in line with the cutter B, as clearly shown in the drawing. The two cutters are L-shaped-- that is to say, they have L-shaped cuttingof the straps c e the lever E is connected with" the shank A, so that when said lever is 'sw'un g its connection with the shank and slide will cause the slide to move down or up, as the case may be, and to cut when the lever is swung down. This connection of the lever with the two cutters is one which gives great power, and allows the application of a hand instrument in places where such instruments were hitherto not found sufficiently strong.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The boltcutter, provided with L-shaped knives, as herein shown and described.
2. The combination of the lever E and straps e c with the shank A and slide 0 of the boltcutter, all arranged to operate as herein shown and described.
JOSEPH TOMLINSON. Witnesses:
