State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVeather- Strips, of which the following is a specifi-' I cation.

This invention relates to window construe tion, more especially to the type of window which is set on hinges along one side and is adapted to open by swinging inward for ventilation purposes, commonly called French windows. Such type of windows, although very popular, have the great disadvantage of allowing the rain and storm to beat in under the lower edge of the sash,

since such lower edge cannot be made water tight for it must'allow of swinging motion to open the window and there must be considerable clearance from the window sill to prevent scraping off of the paint or varnish from the finished Woodwork.

lIany attempts have been made in the past to remedy this defect, but such attempts have been uniformly unsuccessful owing to the fact that most of the devices have been clumsy and diflicult to operate, unsightly, and usually provided for the raising of the whole window sash, which entailed a considerable strain on the hinges. It is among the objects of my invention to obviate the disadvantages and defects of prior constructions, and to produce a device which will be simple, easy to operate, invisible for the most part, and effective to keep out the rain and storm.

In carrying the objects of my invention into effect, I provide an attachment to the ordinary French window sash, a transom I or a door, which will not only keep out the rain but also provides an additional means oflocking the sash in closed position. My invention includes a plate adapted to be lowered into closing position by the rotation of a knob which is attached to the inner side of the sash, and a cover plate is provided to hide and protect the mechanism of the device. i

' he sash l is hinged to the window frame 2 in a manner wellknown in the construc tion of French windows. Along the lower part of the window frame is formed a groove 3, or as shown, the frame has a depressed portion forming the outer part of the window frame. The sash is hinged so as to hang slightly above the sill to avoid injuring the varnish finish by rubbing on the same. At about the center of the lower por tion of the sash is bored a hole 4 having an enlarged portion 5 facing the outside of the window. Ifdesired, a bushing 6 may be inserted in the hole to provide the enlarged portion or to line the hole to avoid excessive friction of the rod 7 which operates therein.

' The said rod has a boss 8 thereon fitting into the enlargement 5, and is provided with a square or other angular head to receive the shank 9 of the knob 10 which operates the closing plate. Along the outside of the sash is placed a closing plate 11 which has a pin 12 formed centrally thereof on inner face of the same.

Pivoted to pin'12 is an arm 13 having fixed to the other end thereof a pin 14 adapted to engage a corresponding opening 15 formed eccentrically on the enlargement or boss 8 of rod 7.

On both sides of the plate 11 are formed vertical slots 16 which are guided by pins 18 on the sash. A cover plate 20 fixed to the sash by pins or screws 21 protects the operating mechanism from the weather. A depression 22 in the sash allows the cam action of the members 8, 13 and 14; to take place freely. In order that the exact position of the closing plate may be readily ascertained at all timesI place on the operating knob an arrow 23 which points upward when the plate is in open position and downward when in closed position.

VVhe-n it is desired to open the window, the knob 10 is rotated until the arrow points upward and the window is then swung in.

In closing the window the procedure is re versed. My device maybe formed of sheet a closing plate pivoted to the opposite end of metal or other suitable material. i.

Having thus fully described mysaid invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
