Description

T. L. TOLAND.
ADJUSTABLE BOOK COVER.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. 9. 1920.

INVEN TOR.
/IIII IIh'IIIIIII".IIII'III A TTORNEY.
THOMAS L. TOLAND, 01* DALLAS, TEXAS.
ADJUSTABLE BOOK-COVER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 9, 1920. Serial No. 357,394.
To all whom it may concern: vBe it known that I, THOMAS L. TOLAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dallas, in the county of Dallas and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Book- Covers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in vbook-covers and refers more particularly to a book cover which is adjustable and to the novel arrangement and construction of such a cover.
The principal object of my invention is toprovide a one-piece book-cover which is so arranged that by folding certain parts and clipping or cutting off certain other portions, the cover may be adjusted to the propersize to fit the book. The .cover presents a neat appearance and being in one piece has. thus those advantages whichmight not be claimed for a two-piece cover.
The invention will be more fully understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof in which Y Figure 1 is a View showing the side or inner face of the cover.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view showing the cover as it appears when folded to be placed on a book, and
Fig. 3 is a partial longitudinal sectional 1 View of Fig. 2, taken on line 3-3.
' Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 designates the body of the cover which has the wings 22 and top and bottom flaps H between which are ears 33.
.The wings 2'2 are gummed as at 55.
The body 1 of the-cover at, the top and bottom has the parallel horizontal lines '66 'and at the sides the perpendicular lines 7-7 for properly marking'and alining the flaps when they are folded to reduce the size of the cover to fit a book. The lines 7+7 extend to the edge of the flaps 4L4 and the lines 66 likewise extend onto the wings 22 a short distance,
being intersected by the lines 2 formed by a continuation of the edge of the flaps 4, and are then directed obliquely inward as. at 8 so that they parallel the top and bottom edges of the wings.
Assuming that the cover is to be placed on a book, the back .of the bookv is alined with the ears 3 3 to ascertain on what lines the ears 33, wings 22 and flaps H are to be .folded.
The book is then removed and the ears 'folde inward and the book replaced, after which the flaps 4.4; origmal cover or boards of the book and the wlngs 2 2 being moistened at the gummed portlons 55 are folded over the .fiaps H, see Fig. 2.
Particular attention, however, is called to Patented Sept. 28, 1920.
the fact that the wings 22 on the lines- 88 containing the gummed surface are not necessary to reduce the fold, and the piece is taken out, asit is obvious that folding the wlngs on the lines 8-8 would reduce the extent of the gummed surface more than b cutting. It will also be noted that by havfolded but out along the, lines 2 and 8 when mg the end of the flap. 4 cut at'an oblique angle to the body 1 instead of at right. angles thereto, the connection between the wlngs and body is stronger than it would be if at right angles thereto. 5
As an additional means of properly alining the book to the cover a horizontal line 9 and a perpendicular line 10 may be provided, the lines intersecting each other at the center of the cover. The back of the book may be placed on the perpendicular line -10 and the original coversspread out on the line 9, and a mark made to indicate the folding point of the cover.
Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claimas new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- A- book cover in one piece having top and bottom flaps and wings on its sides, said wings having gummed ends, the body of the cover provided with horizontal and perpendicular lines on its sides, bottom and top extending onto the flaps and wings, and a horizontal and a perpendicular line intersecting each other at the center of the cover, said lines to assist in folding the flaps to reduced size to fit a book, the lines on the gummed surface of said wings having an 'oblique relationship to the horizontal and perpendicular lines for indicating a'portion .to be out off from said ummed surface.
In testimony whereo I have signed my name tothis specification.
