Description
D. H. BUCHERr COLLAPSIBLE PAIL.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 29, 1920,
Patented Sept. 21, 1920.
" mw/fgw A ram/[K UNITED sr AVID H. BUcrrnR, or LouIsvILnE, KENTUCKY.
V contarsrerln PAI T all to 700m it may concern Be it known that I, DAVID H. BUOHER, a
' citizenof the United States, and resident of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Pails, of whichthe following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to collapsible pails and has particular reference to the provision of a device of this character suitable for use in the filling of automobile radiators.
It frequently happens during travel that the operator of a motor vehicle is required to refill the radiator at times when no ordinary vessel suitable for the purpose is available. The principal object of the present invention is to provide a collapsible pail suitable for convenient storage which is adapted for the purpose designated.
Under the general conditions outlined furthermore it is frequently necessary that water be taken from shallowstreams, and under such circumstances ordinary vessels are poorly adapted for drawing a sufficient supply. A further objectof this invention is therefore toprovide a collapsible pail suitable for use in drawing water from shallow deposits.
Further objects of the invention will appear from the following detailed description thereof.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective of my invention as used in the filling of an automobile radiator; I o
Figs. 2 and 3 are side elevations of the pail;
The numerals 1 and 2 indicate respectively two pieces of suitable flexible material, such as oiled or rubber coated cloth or leather. The pieces 1 and 2 are stitched together at the edges as shown at 3 in Figs. 2 and 8 and together form a flat vessel or pail. The piece 1 is longer than the piece 2 and provides an end strip or flap 4 which eX- tends above the upper or free edge of the piece 2.. Along the free edge of the flap 4 is placed a stiffening member 5, which may be of wood or metal and is secured to the flap by means of rivets, nails or in any other suitable manner. Secured to the outer sides or folded for storage purposes.
Fig. 4 is a central vertical section thereof.
Specification of L'ettersratent. PatentgdSept. 21, 1920.
Application filed May a, 1920. Serial No. 385,323 I other receptacle] Mounted in the piece 1 near the top of the pail is a spout or pouring'tube 8, the's'ame being of metal or other suitable construction.
i From-theforegoing description the nature of the present invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art. As Wlll be seen, a pail constructed of the flexible pieces 1 and 2 maybe conveniently rolled Being flat the pail is adapted to be inserted into, and to scoop up water from shallow. places. IV hen filled the pail may be carried by means of theflexible handle 6 without leakage through the spout 8 for the reason'that 7 said spout is near the top of the pail. In order to pour fromthe pail, for instance into the filling tube 9 of an automobile radiator, the spout 8 isinserted therein and the bottom of the pail lifted by means of the strap 7. The operator still maintaining hold upon the bail 6, the flap 4 of the pail is folded upwardly and forms a cover for the pail to prevent leakage during the operation. It will be obvious that by 'reasonof the construction herein described itis possi- 'ble to employ a spout or tube in the bucket 1 without the necessity of providing a valve therefor.
tion, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a collapsible pail in combination with the body of the pail, a pouring spout located in the upper portion of said body, a
flap adapted to form a closure for the mouth of the pail, and a stiffening strip along the free edge of said flap. I 2. In a collapsible pail in combination with the body of the pail, a pouring spout located in the upper portion ofsaid body, a flap adapted to form a closure for the mouth of the pail, and a flexible bail secured to said flap and the opposite side of the pail.- 8. In a collapsible pail in combination with the body of the pail, a pouring spout located in the upper portion of said body, a
'flap adapted to form a closure for the mouth of the pail, a stiffening strip along the free edge of said flap, and a flexible bail secured to said flap and the opposite side of the pail. l
4:. In a collapsible pail in combinati n With the body of the pail, a pouring spout located in the upper portion of said body, a flap adapted to form a closure for the mouth of the pail, and a loop secured to the bottom of said pail.
5. In a collapsible pail in combination With the body of the pail, a pouring spout located in the upper portion of said body, a flap adapted to form a closure for the mouth of the pail, a stiffening strip along the free edge of said flap, and a loop secured to the bottom of said pail.
6. In a collapsible pail in combination with the body of the pail, a pouring spout located in the upper portion of said body, a flap adapted to form a closure for the mouth of the pail, a flexible bail secured to said flap and the opposite side of the pail. and a loop secured to the bottom of said pail.
7. In a collapsible pail in combination With the body of the pail, a pouring spout located in the upper portion of said body, a flap adapted to form a closure for the mouth of the pail, a stiiiening strip along the free edge of said flap, a flexible bail secured to said flap and the opposite side of the pail, and a loop secured to the bottom of said pail.
8. A collapsible pail comprising two pieces of flexible material secured together at their edges to form a fiat pail having one side open, one of said pieces of material being longer than the other so as to extend beyond the latter along the open side to form a free flap for the temporary closure of the pail, and a pouring spout located in the longer piece of material near the open side of the pail. i DAVID H. BUCHER.
