FURNITURE CONSTRUCTION.
Specification of Letters Patent. t t t 14, 1920 Application an December 18,1315. Serial No. 67,498.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN F. GAIL, a citi-.
Construction, of wiich the following isaspecification. V V I This invention relates to improvements'm furniture construction and moreparticularly to a new and improved means for connecting the uprights, cross-rods, tubes, bars or other like members of a furniture construction to the side wall of a post frame, cross-rod or other member positioned transversely of the first mentioned member. More generally the invention refers to means for holding in fixed position the end of a cross connecting member in proper relation to the side wall of a frame member.
T he salient objects of the invention are to provide newand improved means for fastening together the various component parts of a furniture construction such as form the a cap or ferrule normally used to fit over and conceal the end of a cross connecting member is used also as the securing means, being preferably welded to the side wall of the frame member; to provide a construction in which the cap or ferrule which forms the combined finishing piece and holding member is in the form of a cap substantially closed at one end, there being, however, an aperture in the end of the cap forming an inner ring portion which is welded or otherwise secured to the side wall; to provide a construction in which the side wall of the bar to which the cap is secured is preferably provided with an aperture registering with the aperture in the cap so that the two elements have corresponding inner rim or ring portions which can be welded together; to provide a constructi n in which the caps or ferrules previously mentioned are secured to the side wall of the frame member or cross conne: ting piece by joining them through welding or otherwise integrally connecting them in a circle or other relatively large area; to provide a construction in which where the frame members are constructed of relatively light lock-seam tubing, the conncction between the ferrule and the tube can be advantageously made at the lock-seam joint; to provide a construction in which the securing means is so arranged that the sides of the apertured portions of the'lo-Ikseam joint can be welded or otherwise caused to become unitary, thus strengthening the lock-seam joint and more securely fastening it together; to provide a construction fastening the filler bars or the like to the v posts, cross rails or other frame members; to provide a construction which can be economically manufactured and shipped owing to the fact that a maximum amount of strength can be obtained with a minimum amountof material; to provide a c0nstruction in which the joints of the finished articles willbe entirely concealed within the finishing pieces, which latter can be economically formed of stampings; and in general to provide a simple and improved construction of the general character referred to. i Y
In the drawings: v
Figure 1 is a front elevation, parts being broken away and shown in section, of a bed unit embodying my invention,
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary top plan viewof the lower cross rail showing the ferrule in place with the filler bar removed.
. Fig. 8 is an enlarged fragmentary cross section View, through the parts shown in Fig. 2.
Describing in detail the particular embodiment of my invention shown in the drawings, 1 designates the top rail of a head or foot unit of a bed and 2 and 3 the side posts thereof. The top rail and side posts are preferably formed integral from a continuous length of lock-seam tubing, the lock-seam 4 thereof being positioned on the interior side wall of the posts when the latter are bent down into substantial parallelism as shown in Fig. 1. The posts are supported at. their lower ends by the usual ner hereinafter described in detail. A similar series of ferrules or caps 12 are secured to the lower wall or surface of the top rail 1 and these opposed ferrules are adapted to receive a plurality of uprights or filler bars 18.
The present invention contemplates that the caps or ferrules which serve as the finishing pieces shall comprise the sole securing means for holding the uprights in fixed relation to the top and bottom rails and the latter in fixed relation to the side posts. The construction and manner of securing these caps or ferrules forms an important feature of my invention and is shown in detail in the enlarged fragmentary views of Figs. 2 and 3, the connection only between one'of the ferrules and the bottom rail 7 being described in detail, since the remaining connections are of the same type.
Extending through the lock seam 10 is an aperture 14: which provides an inner rim or edge 15 through the lock seam joint. This rim or edge registers with a similar rim or edge 16 surrounding the aperture 17 formed in the closed ends 18 of the ferrule. In attaching the latter to the cross rail the cap or ferrule is positioned so that its aperture registers with the corresponding aperture in the lock seam of the cross rail and the inner rims or edges welded or otherwise integrally united to form a unitary structure. This novel construction not only permits a very rigid and eflicient connection between the cap and the cross rail but it can also be used for more securely fastening together the interlocking portions of the lock seam joint, thusstrengthening the cross rail at the points of connection between the latter and the ferrules.
' ting connection.
In assembling the bed unit, the stock for the main frame is bent to form the top rail and side posts, the ferrules are secured to the side posts and the bottom and top rails, and the ends of the bottom rail and filler tubes pressed or otherwise inserted in their respective ferrules so as to form a tight fit- While the ferrules may be secured to the side walls of the respective rails or posts by any known system of welding or the like, I have in the particular embodiment of my invention, shown in the drawings, secured them together by acetylene welding, causing the flame to pass down through the aperture 16 against the side walls surrounding the registering apertures of the ferrule and cross rail, thus causing a homogeneous inner wall to be produced surrounding the apertures in the two elements. lvloreover, this manner of securing the parts together produces a fusing of the metals in a ring or at spaced points, thus giving a greater strength that where a single spot is welded in the center. In its broader aspects the invention is not limited to the particular form or area of connection shown nor in any manner except as specified in the appended claim.
I claim as my invention:
In furniture construction, the combination of a pair of initially separate parts, comprising a tube and an end socket for a spindle having an end wall butted against the Wall of the tube, said walls having a common opening therethrough surrounded by a connecting ring consisting of a consolidated composition of the metal of both Walls.
