Description

F. M. LA'sERsoN.
PORTABLE sAvy. APPLICATION IIILED DEC.30, I9I
PatentedSept. 14, 1920.
PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK MAURICE LASEBSON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PORTABLE SAW.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 14, 1920.
Application led December 90., 1918. Serial No. 268,790.
To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, FREDERICK MAURICE LAsERsoN, a subject of the King of England, residin at 100 Fifth avenue, city, county, and tate of New York, U. S. A., have invented new and luseful Improvements in Portable Saws, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to portable saws.
rIhe object of the invention is toprovide a power driven saw so constructed and arranged that it may be operated where the ordinary saws cannotY be used. A further object is toprovide a base and support for such a saw, and a mounting thereon for the saw blade and its operating means which will permit the saw blade to be moved with relation to its base or support. A more specific object is to provide means for indieating the depth of the cut of the saw and also ,means for limiting the depth of the cut.
rlhe invention consists of the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as herein illustrated, described and claimed.
ln the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, is illustrated a form of ernbodiment of the invention and one modification, in which drawings similar reference characters designate corresponding parts and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation;
Fig. 2 is a plan view;
Fig.- 3 is a horizontal section, taken approniniately on line 3 3 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates i a standard to which are aiiixed feet 2. The
feet 2 are pivoted on the standard 1 so that they may swing entirely around the standard, and are maintained thereon by means of a cap 3 held in place by a screw 3a.
A bar l has one end secured to the stand- 4 ard 1 midway of its length and at its outer a scale 7.
A loop 8`is formed -on the opter end of a handle 9 and isslidably dis osed on the pin 5, vso as to slide freely t ereon.- The downward movement of the loop 8 is limited by means of the stop 6, land the scale 7 indicates the movement Yof the handle 9 and i Asaw blade hereinafter described.
in consequence the depth of the cut of the Adjacent its upper end the standard 1 is provided with a slotA 10 to form a guide for the inner end of the handle 9 in its vertical movement.
A supporting rod 11 is disposed parallel to and adjacent the standard 1 so as to slide through a guide 12 which is secured to the upper end of the standard 1. Midway `its length the rod 11 is secured to the eX- treme inner end of the handle 9, as at 413, so that movement of the handle 9 is cmmunicated to the supporting rod 11. The lower end of the supporting rod 11 works through a loop 14 formed on the inner end of the bar f1, which loop and the guide member 12 form a guiding means for the supporting rod 11. The lower end` of the supporting rod 11 is secured as at 15 to a casing 16, which casing is connected to or forms a part of a motor'l?, which motor has itsupper end securedas at 18 to the upper end of the supporting rod 11. Vertical. movement of the supporting rod 11 carries with it the motor and the casing, and all of their connectedY parts. A coiled spring 19 disposed around the supporting rod 11 normally maintains the parts in an elevated position so that the saw blade 20 does not extend below the lowerline of the base formed by the feet 2. A shaft 21 is carried in a bearing 22 and the saw blade 20 is secured thereon as by means of a nut 23. A beveled pinion 24 is secured on the shaft 21 and is arranged to mesh with a gear 25 on the shaft 26 of the motor 17.
The device is operated by placing the base formed by the feet 2 upon the door, ceiling, or partition 27, starting the motor and pressing Qny the' handle 9 to force the I saw blade 2O therein.
what is c aimed as new and desired to secure bv Letters Patent 1s:
1. A portable saw comprising a standard,
ido
a pair of feet pivotcd thereto at the base v thereof, said feet being adjustable Von said ivot in a plane perpendicular to the plane of the said standard, a horizontally disposed transverse bar secured to said standard, and forming a guide to the one side thereof, a second guide secured to the top of said standard, a motor supporting member adapted to move in said guides, a motor secured to saidsupporting member, a saw mounted in the latter, means for rotating said saw from the said motor, a spring, for maintaining said motor and saw 1n normally raised position with respect to the said standard and means for brin 'ng the said saw into contact with the wo 2. A portable saw comprising a standard, feet pivoted to said standard at the base thereof and arranged to operate in a plane perpendicular to the plane of the said standard, means for adjusting the position of the plurality.
feet with respect to the standard, a of guides secured to the said standard, a member adapted to move in said guides,a saw, a motor for driving the same, means for supporting said motor and saw on the said member, a spring on the latter for maintaining the motor and saw in inactive position and a. handle secured tothe said memberior operating the saw.
3. A portable saw comprising a standard,
a member secured thereto transversely there- 4 of and forming a guide to the Aone side of the said standard, a second guide on the latter, a saw, amotor for driving `the same,
the plane of the said standard, a motor and n saw blade disposed above said feet and arranged to have movement with respect thereto, a spring for-maintaining said motor and saw in normally raised inactive position, a handle disposed at an angle to the said standard for operating said saw and means for limitingA and measuring the said movement of the saw.
In testimony 'whereof I have signed my name to` this specication..
FREDERICK MAURICE LASERSON.
