. This invention relates generally to automatic irearmsand it more specially relates to a firearm of that class which comprises a frame, provided with a cartridge magazine, a barrel supported by the frame, and a breech-slide mounted to reciprocate upon the 'frame for opening and closing the firing chamber of the barrel. Ili/'hen a cartridge is tired, the breech-slide recoils to the open rear position, thereby extracting the empty cartridge shell from the barrel and ejecting the shell from the firearm and receiving another cartridge from the magazine for insertioninto the chamber of the barrel during the ensuing forward closing movement of the breech-slide, under the reaction of a spring in which energy was stored during the opening movement.
In accordance withthe present invent-ion, I provide a single latch which serves as a side safety to lock the hammer and also serves to lock the slide in retracted position, this being of advantage in that the construction is simplified, the number of parts to a minimum and,`therefore,
economy in manufacture and ease in may nipulation is obtained. Also, the latch may be operated to release the slide or the hammer without shifting the hand holding the v rearm or otherwise interfering with the' aiming of the iirearm.

In the drawings, I have shown, by way of illustration only, a pistole-f a well known make but it is to be understood that the present invention has general application to firearms-of this general type. As firearms of this sort are old and well known, only Q eeincation of Letters Patent.

The manner in which this side safety is associated with the hammer to lock the same may be varied, but by way of illustration I have shown an old arrangement wherein the latch carries an inwardly extending lug 12 which, when the `latch is in the locking position illustrated in Fig. 1, is of the sear e preventing actuation of the latter. When the latch is swung down, the notch 12a in the lug 12 is brought opposite the lower end of the sear e so that the latter may-be actuated by the trigger to release the hammer. In accordance with the present invention, interengaging means are provided on the latch 10 and slide l) for locking the latter vin retracted position, and this means is automatically rendered effective b the follower of the magazine after the last cartridge has been fired. y way of example, the latch is shown as having on its upper edge a projection 13 and in the lower edge of the slide is a notch 14 so located that when the slide is in its retracted position, as illustrated in Fig. 2, the projection may engage in the notch to lock the slide. The latch 10 may be raised by the follower into locking engagement with the slide in any suitable manner, but for illustrative purposes, the latch is shown as having adjacent its free end an inwardly projecting stud 15 extending through an opening 16 in the side of the frame and into the path of travel of a pin 17 extending from one side of the follower 7L and operating in a slot 18 in the side Wall of the magazine g. As shown in Fig. 2, after the last cartridge has been fed in the path of the lower end adapted to be actuated by the from the `magazine into the barrel, the pin 17 engages the stud 15 whereby the latch is urged into raised position so that after the last cartridge has been re'd the projection 13 will engage in the notch 14C and lock the slide in its retracted position. rlFhus when ua filled magazine is substituted for the empty one, the slide will be in position to receive the first cartridge. In a firearm of the character described, a frame, a breech-slide mounted for reciprocation thereon, a magazine including a ollower, a single means for locking the ham- 1 mer in cocked position and locking the slide in retracted position and interengaging means between said follower and locking means whereby the latter is actuated by said follower.
