KNOCKDOWN SHEET-METAL DRAWER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 7,1920.
Application filed April 26, 1920. Serial No. 876,623.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIL J. J ONES, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Jamestown, in the county'of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented cer-. tain new and useful Improvements in Knock- Down Sheet-Metal Drawers, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
The invention relates to lmock-down sheet metal drawers in which the parts are detachably attached to one another so that they may be shipped knocked-down and set up at their destination, or may be knockeddown for any other purpose, such as repair or storage; and the invention consists in providing a drawer having interlocking parts which engage one another so that all said parts will be fixedly held in attachment to one another by means of two at taching bolts and a spring catch, said parts being so constructed as to permit their being easily standardized for manufacture by means of machine dies and presses, thereby accomplishing said manufacture in an economical manner and giving great durability and strength to the set-up drawer; and the invention consists in the novel features and combinations hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of the assembled drawer showing certain of the features of its construction. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the drawer parts separated from one another with lead lines showing the manner of assembling the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the inner side of the rear plate of the drawer head showing the look as slipped into the same and the locking lugs on each of the end flanges, also the locking slot in the bottom flange. Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view of the drawer side at line 4-4 in Fig. 5, the middle portion being broken away to show the front and rear ends of the drawer. Fig, 5 is a vertical sectional view of the front por tion of the drawer at line 55 in Fig. 8. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective View of the lock holding bracket plate which is spot welded to the inner side of the rear plate of the drawer head so that the lock may he slipped into the same as shown in dotted outline. Fig. 7 is a vertical sectionalview of the top portion of the drawer head showing the lock in dotted outline. Fig. 8 is an elevation of the drawer with the front plate of the drawer head removed showingthe rear head plate in position and a locking or latching spring on the bottom plate of the drawer extending up through the same to lock said rear plate of the drawer head in positlon when turned into the front plate of the drawer head as shown in Fig. 5 in dotted outline; and Fig. 9 is a perspective view of said locking spring.
Like characters of reference refer to corresponding parts in the several views.
The numeral 10 designates the drawer head, and the numerals 11 and 12 the drawer sides, 13 the drawer bottom, 14 the rear end and 15 the rear plate of the drawer head 10.
The drawer head 10 has the inturned spaced return bend flanges on all sides which form said drawer head into a boxshaped sheet metal head having the inturned lug 16 with the slots 17 in each of said lugs at each end-of said drawer head. The lugs 16 enter the holding slots 18 in the drawer sides 11 and 12, which slots 18 are preferably spaced from the forward end of the drawer sides so as to fit said forward end of the drawer sides against the inner wall of the drawer head 10. 1
The drawer bottom 13 has downwardly turned flanges 34 on each side which fit into the upwardly turned flanges 19 on the lower edges of the drawer sides 11 and 12. The drawer head 10 also has the upturned lugs 20 which engage in the spaced slots 21 in said drawer bottom 13, which slots 21 are also preferably spaced from the forward end of the drawer bottom 13 a sufficient distance to press said bottom against the inner wall of the drawer head 10 to brace thesame.
The rear end plate 14 has rearwardly turned flanges on its lower edge and ends, the bottom flange engaging in the upwardly return bend flan e 24 on the bottom plate 13 and the end anges engaging in the return bend flanges 22 on the rear ends of the drawer sides 11 and 12, a bolt 23 being provided through suitable holes in the rear ends of the drawer sides 11 and 12 and through the end flanges on the rear end plate 14, thereby'locking all the parts firmly at the rear end of the drawer.
The drawer parts are firmly locked in position at their front end by means of the rear plate 15 of the drawer head 10, which rear plate 15 has forwardly turned flanges on all its sides, theend flanges having the locking lugs 25 which enter the slots 17 in the lugs 16 on the drawer head 10, thereby locking the drawer sides 11 and 12 onto said In s and the drawer head 10.
he upper flange 26 is shaped to spring through slot 32 in said drawer bottom to engage m the continuance of said slot 32 in the lower flange 33 of said rear plate 15 of the drawer head 10.
As the rear plate 15 swings into place, the lugs 25 are so spaced as to seek the slots 17 in the lugs 16'at each end of the drawer head, and the upper end of the spring 28 is inclined so as to'snap into the slot 32 in the flan e 33. At the same time, the tumbler of the ock 29 which is inserted into the open bracket plate 30 on the inner side of the plate 15 seeks the opening 37 provided in the front plate of the drawer head 10, said lock 29 having been slipped into position in the drawer bracket 30 before the rear plate 15 is inserted into the front plate of the drawer head. This arrangement of the lock 29 holds it firmly inposition.
The front plate of the drawer head is preferably made with an inner plate 36 which is held in place by the nuts 38 on the inner ends of the handle 31, a sheet of asbestos 35 being placed between the inner wall of the front plate of the drawer head 10 and said inner plate 36. Around the opening 37 for the tumbler of the lock 29, a spacing plate 39 is preferably provided so as to strengthen the parts at this point and to hold the sheet metal plates and the lock 29 firmly in line.
The manner of assembling the set-up drawer as shown in Fig. 1 has been given in the description thus far. In order to disassemble or knock down the drawer, the
' bolts 23 are withdrawn, thereby permittinlg the withdrawal of the rear end plate 14.
tool is then inserted in the downward curve of the leaf spring 28, thereby pressing said leaf spring downward sufliciently to permit the rear plate 15 being moved rearwardly on the radial are 27 and removed from the drawer, after which the bottom 13 and sides 11 and 12 ma be easily removed from the .front plate 0 the drawer head 10.
It isapparent that all of said sheet metal plates or parts can be easily struck-up by means of suitable dies so that the drawer can be economically manufactured and also when assembled, the parts of said drawer are pressed and locked firmly in position, making a strong and durable construction.
I claim as new: 1. In a drawer, a front plate having inturned end and top and bottom flanges, spaced lugs on each of said end flanges haying slots therein and.- spaced lugs on said bottom flange, drawer side plates and a bottom plate having similarly spaced slots to receive said lugs therethrough, a rear plate for the drawer head having lockin lugs spaced to enter said slots in said end ugs to hold said part firmly in position, and a rear end plate for said drawer.
