J. F. OBRIEN.
AWNING ARM.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 19. I917.
,5 1' Patent-ed Aug. 31,1920.
WITNESSES: I INVENTOR I Wu% .4 7 w JOSEPHF. OBRIEN, 0F wris'r ixrnw YdRKfNEW JERSEY.
AWNING-ARM.'
' Application filed June '19,
. strength,-those parts that, are subjected to the most strain having greater strength and all side motion and wobbling of the arms be ing eliminated. Furthermore, my saidarm will, without the use of springs or the like, always normally retain the awning in extended position, the parts of'the arm being so correlated and arranged as to cause the weight of the entire arm to exert its pressure on the outer end of the awning and all movement of the outer end of the awning caused by wind or otherwise, will be at once communicated to and taken up by the entire arm.
My invention furthermore embodies certain features of construction, arrangement and combinations of parts which are herein-- after more fully set forth and illustrated in the drawings, and will be more'particularly pointed out in the appended claims. r
In the accompanyingdrawings in whlch similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of an awning arm or support embodying myinvention;
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the device illustrated in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the awning arm shown in Fig. l in its extendedposition, the
outer member being broken away, and the securing bracket being shown in section.
Referring now to these drawings, 1 indicates the wall of a building, and 3 the canvas of an awning which it is desired to support and guide and which, as illustrated, is adapted to be rolled up on a'roller 3". The
opposite ends of the roller, as shown, are
suitably mounted in bearings 3* on brackets suitably disposed and secured to the wall 1, only one of which brackets is shown and designated 2. Each bracket 2 has, as illustrated, two pairs 4 and 5 respectively of 1917. Serial no. 175,570.
' pivot bearings. e Pivoted in the bearings-dis an outwardly and downwardly inclining base-member 6, comprising, ias shown,' par-'- allel spaced twin bars -6 6". To the respective twin members oftlr is base-member Specification of Letters latent. Aug9 1 19 6 are pivoted at .their'ends two (substantially parallel intermediate members 7 and 8- re- 1 spectively, which members also, as illustrated, comprise .pazrallel twin :bars 7 and 8+l8 respectively, and to :the outer ends of both'of these members an outer member 9.
' Itwill be apparent that the connection of the intermediatemembers 7jand 8 at theiropposlteends with the base member 6 and" outer member 9 provides a parallel disposition of the base and outer members, aswell 7 and-8 is pivoted i as a parallel disposition 'of the intermediate members, and this arrangement may be'said to form an -art1cular parallelogram. Suitable means for supporting and guiding the said articular parallelogram inte'rmediate its ends is provided which, as shown, comprises a' member plvoted at its inner end in the bearings 5, and at its outer end tothe, 7 twin 7 bars 8 --'8 intermediate the, ends thereof. v In order to limit the outward extension of the articular ,parallelogram,- I' provide an extension 6 of the base-member, which ata suitable outward limit abuts against;
the twin bars 8 '8 of the arm 8.
It will be obvious from the above, that the tendency of the awning armswill be to extend outwardly andjthat the entire weight of the several members of the said arms will be caused to press against the outer endof the awning, so that the'outer edge of the awning will be prevented'from flapping, without the use of springs or the like, and that the slightest movement of the outer edge of the awning will imme diately be communicated to all of themem bers of the arm. Furthermore, it will be obvious that an extremely simple, strong" 1 and rigid construction will be provided by i the arrangement hereinabove described.
Having described my invention, I claim; 'f
1. An awning support comprising a pair of awning arms at opposite sides of the awning, each side having a base member pivoted at a fixed pointto the window frame, two parallel intermediate. members pivotally connected to said base membercontiguous to the outer end thereof, an outer member connected at one end tothe awning site ends with the inner of said two parallel members and a connection intermediate its ends with the other of said two parallel members, a supporting member pivoted to one of said intermediate members at one end and to a fixed point on the window frame at the opposite end and means for limiting the extension movement of said members. i 1 V 1' '2. An awning support eomprising'a pair of awning arms at opposite sides of the awning,-eacl1 sidehaving a base Vmember pivoted at a fixed point ;to the window frame two parallel'intermediate members pivotally eonnectedto said base member contiguousto the outer end thereof, an outer member connected at one end to the awning and having a-pivotal connection at its oppoand having a pivotal connection at its oppo ,Vsite end with the inner of said two parallel members and a connection intermediate its ends with theouter off'said two parallel members, a supporting member pivoted to. one of said intermediate members at one end and to a fixed point on the window frame at the opposite end and an extension on the base memberladapted toabut against JOSEPH F OBRIEN.
