To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that l, .latins l?. Donovan, a citizen of the United States, residing at Quincy, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handshields for Riveters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to shields for the hand, and particularly to a shield or protector designed to protect the hand of a riveter from the heat of the riveting die and the heat of the rivets and plates.

The general object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is so designed that it may be readily made of leather or like flexible and relatively heat resistant material, and which will embrace and cover that portion of the palm of the hand and those fingers which are liable to come into contact with hot metal and which will entirely protect the thumbs.

A further object is to provide a device of this character wherein the thumb is protected on its inside face by two thicknesses of leather' and a thickness of asbestos, and in this connection to provide a protector of this character having its body made from a single blank out to provide an opening for the thumb, the tongue cut out from said opening being used to form one of the thicknesses for the thumb piece.

Other objects will appear in the course of the following description.

My invention is illustrated in the accom panying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of a shield or protector constructed in accordance with my invention;

Fig. 2 is a face view making the protector;

Fig. 3 is an exterior face view of the shield, the thumb being Vleft unfinished;

Fig. 4: is a cross sectional view of the thumb at the tip;

Fig. 5 is a cross sectional view of the thumb below the tip, and;

Fig. 6 is a fragmentary section on the line G-6 of Fig. 3.

Referring to these figures, and partieularly to Fig. 2, it will be seen that my protector comprises a thickness 10 of leather or like material, having a length somewhat greater than the hand over which it is deto fit, the base of this piece or blank of the blank used in signed Specification of Letters Fatent.`

10 being cut at right angles to the longitudinal axis of this member 10, and the rest of the blank having a rounded edge. The blank is slit inward from the base by slits 11, thus providing a tongue 12. Both riveted and sewed to the exterior face of the member 10 is a layer 13 of leather, and between the layer 13 and the tongue or layer 10, is a layer of asbestos 14. The layer 13 is cut away at 15 on a concave curve so as to extend around the thumb opening formed by turning up the tongue 12, and attached to the layer or blank 1() and extending at right angles to the axis of the blank are the straps 16 formed with perforations for engagement with the tongues of buckles 17 which are attached to short straps 18 riveted or otherwise attached to the outer face of the blank 10. After the protector is partially formed and the tongue 12 has been turned outward, the leather at the lower margins of the slits 11 is overlapped, as illustrated in Fig. 3, and these overlapped margins are riveted, as at 19. Thus, a triangular opening is left in the member 1() which forms the thumb hole.

Thus, as illustrated,the tongue and. the asbestos strip are disposed. upon the inner face of the thumb piece 22 and en tend across the seam thereof so that between the thumb of the user and the heated article being handled, there are two thicknesses of leather and one thickness of asbestos.

the material might be asbestos cloth, but I regard the leather as preferable because the asbestos cloth ordinarily has not sutlicient strength for the purpose.
