To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DORSEY M. STOOIE Darin, a citizen of the United States, residing at lQile-nboro, in the county ot'ltitchie and State of W est l irginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Reels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a novel construction of reel for wire and the like and the principal object of the invention is to provide means for easily and quickly securing a roll of wire to the reel with means for winding or unwinding the wire therefrom.
Another object of the invention is to provide indicating means for indicating the length of wire removed from or wound upon the reel.
Still another object of the invention is to provide means for breaking the reel when desired.
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
in describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure l is a plan view of the device;

In these views 1 indicates the case for inclosing the reel and 2 indicates the cover thereof. As will be seen, the case is of cylindrical form but is provided with a flat portion 3. The lid is also provided with a fiat portion at which is hinged to the edge or": the portion 3. The lid is locked in closed position by the latch 5. A spindle (3 is centrally arranged on the bottom of the case and projects upwardly as shown. This spindle rotatably supports a sleeve or hub 7 which is provided with screw threads at its upper part. This sleeve is held on the spindle by the bolt 8. Arms 9 radiate from said sleeve, said arms forming spokes and Specification of Letters Eatent.

support the circular rack 10. Rollers 11 are arranged around the bottom of the case with which the under face of the rack engages. The teeth of the rack are engaged by the toothed wheel 12 which is secured to a shaft 13 which passes through a journal carried by the flat part 3 of the case and the outer end of said shaft is provided with a handle 1%. in this way when the handle is actuated the reel formed by the rack, the spokes and the hub will be caused to revolve. The wheel 12 is inclosed in a recess formed by a depending strip 15 having its upper portion secured to the inner wall of the case and its lower portion curved inwardly to provide the recess. Slot-ted upright members 16 have guide ways formed at their lower ends which engage the upper surface or the spokes. Togglelevers 17 connec these upright members with the hub and with a sleeve 18 having its interior screwthreaded for engaging the screw threads on said hub. The lower end of the sleeve 18 is provided with a groove 19 and a collar 2') fixed in said groove. One of the links of each toggle lever has its upper end pivoted to said collar and its other end pivoted to the lower part of one of the upright members. The other link of said lever has its upper end provided with a pin which engages the slot in the upright member and its lower end is pivoted to the lower end of the hub. It will thus be seen that by screwingthe sleeve 18 downwardly or upwardly on the hub the'upright members will be moved away from or toward said hub. In this way the upright members may be moved inwardly so that a coil of wire may be placed around the uprights and then by screwing the sleeve 18 downwardly the uprights will be expanded so as to grip the coil of wire to prevent movement of the coil on said uprights. In order to facilitate the rotation of the sleeve 18 the same is provided with a handle 21 and a hook 22 is connected with said handle by a spring 23. This hook is adapted to engage one of the toggle levers so as to prevent rotation of the sleeve 18 A brake is provided for the reel and this brake consists of a screw threaded plug 24 passing through a screw threaded opening 25 in the lower part of the case and carrying a spring plunger 26 for engaging an inclined surfaceQ'T on the annular rack. This screw plug is provided with a handle 28 and with a lock nut 29 for holding it in braking position.
The lid of the case is provided with a downwardly projecting bracket 30 which carries a guide roller 31 for the wire and the lid' is also provided with a horizontal guiding tube 32 which is secured to its under face and is provided with enlarged ends. The inner end is located adjacent the guide roller 31, when the top is closed, and its outer end registers with an opening in the top edge of the case so that the wire may pass there-from.
A frame 33 is secured to the under face of the'lid and this framesupports a train of gearing 34. One wheel 35 of this train is provided with a grooved periphery and is located adjacent the inner end of the outlet tube 32 sothat the wire passing to said tube will be engaged by said groove. A second grooved wheel 36 is carried by a swingin arm 37 and this wheel 36 is moved toward and away from said wheel 35 by a screw threaded rod 38 which is connected with the journal of said wheel 36 and engages the nut carried by the lid. This rod is provided with a handle 39 and with a lock nut l0. \Vhen the peripheries of the wheels 35 and 36 are in engagement with each other the wire will be gripped between them so that the passage of the wire will causesaid wheels to rotate and this rotation will'be communicated to a dial 41 which has its rack 42 in engagement with the last wheel of the train. This dial is provided with suitable indicia to indicate the length of the wire passing to or from the device. The lid is provided with an opening 43. through which the dial may be read. It will thus be seen that the coil of wire may be easily and quickly clamped to the reel or the end of the wire to be wound on the reel can be secured to said reel. The wire can be easily wound upon or unwound from the wheel and whenever desired, the brake may be manipulated to lock the reel against movement. .The length of the wire being removed or wound upon the wheel can easily be read from the dial.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes i fall within the scope of the appended claims.
That I claim is 1. A reel of the class described comprising a case, a cover therefor, a spindle there in, a hub rotatably mounted on the spindle and having a screwthreaded portion, spokes secured to said hub, slotted upright members slidably engaging with said spokes, a sleeve interiorly screw-threaded and engaging the screw-threaded part of the hub, a collar rotatably carried by said sleeve, toggle levers connecting the upright members with said collar and with said hub.
2. A reel of the class described comprising a case, a spindle carried thereby, a hubrotatably mounted on the spindle and haying a screw-threaded portion, a sleeve interiorly screw -threaded and engaging said screw-threaded portion, a collar rotatably carried by said sleeve, spokes secured to said hub, upright members slidably engaging said spokes, toggle levers connecting said upright members with the collar and hub and means for connecting said sleeve with said toggle levers to prevent vertical movement of the sleeve.
