To all zehomitmytconceran H; V Be it known that I, 'RUTHEREORDJB. CHASL'EL citlzen of the'United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago,in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invent ed certain new and useful. Improvements in Cleaning and Polishing Apparatus; and I do hereby declare that the following is: a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being hadtothe accompanying drawings, and to the numeralsof reference marked thereon, which form a partof this specification. t I y .This invention relates to a cleaning, pollshing and ,similar. apparatus, and
although not limited to such use, is particu-.;
larly adapted for use in cleaning. the type matricesemployed inqlinotype machines. V
In the operation of linotype machines it is found that the matrices become dirty, and stickyso that they .do not slide into place readily and in some cases do not fit the frames properly. e One of the obsects, therefore, of-this in vention is to provide machinev for cle an ingtype matrices.
Another object of the inventionis to provide means, H letters on the matrices during the cleaning operation.
A further object the inventiongis to providea machine for not only cleaning type matrices, but also for performing many a other operations connected with linotype,
typesetting and printing establishments,
' such as grinding millingor drilling.
Other and furtherimportantobjects of this invention will be apparent from the dis-' closures in the drawings andspecification,
The invention (-in-apreferred form) is illustrated in the drawings, and hereinafter more fully described. 1 I J On thedrawings: I 1 Figure 1 is a sldeelevation of a machine constructed in accordanc'e'with the present invention. q

isan elevation matrix holder.
t Fig; is a plan view of the cover-offthe I of end. of the Fig. ,8 is anelevation of theother end of the .matrix holder.
A stshown on the drawings The .whole, machine is carried standard 1, carrying at its. upper xendl an electric-motor 2; .The casing of thismotor is, provided with, a depending' rod "3, slidablc, vertically in the. standa'rd,1,1so that the l m w L'; i
If desired, the height oflthe motor 2, may be adjusted without preventing angular movement of .the motor about the .axis of the standard 1. This may be accomplished by providing a collar 27 adapted {to rest on the top of the" standard and to be secured to the rod 3,. by a set screw 28 .atlany ,de-
sired position therealong. In the construc tionflshown, anoil pan 29, is formed inte;
' rallywith the collar 2?,to catch anydrip iiings from the motor. The shaft .of, the motor extends some height of the motor maybe adjusted vertiby; i
distance-.therefrom and is supported by an extension 5, of the motor casing. To the end off-this shaft a buffingwheel 6, or'the.
like, my be clamped by means of thenut Y I 8 andwasher 9,1which presses the wheel againstaflange lO, on the shaft.
Beneath" I ranged, carried by a bracket'll, pivotally connected to a collar 12, on the standard 1.
This. collar 12,.ismade in two halves connected' by bolts 13', sothat the collarmay the wheel .6, a supportj7, is ar I be arrangedto grip the standardfatany desired height or angular position.
"The ,pivotal connection between the bracket 11 and'collar 12, compri'ses'1a pair oflugs 14: on the' bracket, anda lug 17.011 the collar, through which passesa'bolt 15, forming the pintle of thehinge. By tightening the nut 16 on this bolt, the latter may be non-'rotatably secured to the lugs 14 without restrictingthe swinging movement of the bracket. However, by tightening a set screw 18, passing through the lug 17,
v the bolt 14: maybe locked 'to the latter and any swinging movei'nent of the bracket vented.
A cylindrical boss"19--is" forined at the I outer end of the bracket 11, for the recepboth angularly and axially, a set" sc'rew 23 may be provided. 7
device such: as a'vise or clutoh'may bearranged. This table may convenient-lybe generally "designated 30. This frame, com rises side membersv 31 and end members 32 and 33,.secured together by screws' 3ft. Between the" end members, partition gtripssii eiitehd'spaced apart the length of theftypefmatrices 35', shown more par.-
formed with a projection 25, 'adapted for sliding engagement with a dove-tail channel 26, in the upper surface of the "support '7 Upon the table 25 are placedthef'type matrices to be cleaned by the 'bufiingwheel6.
The type matrices are. conveniently held during the cleaning ope'rationby. a frame tic'ulaifly infFigf10. The matrices areheld in place by clamping screws 36, arrangedatfthe end of each row of matrices; Each .screw 36, is provided mer t wtha T-s'lot 38,1? one f ace fo f*ra block 39, adaptedto' bear against the matrices in that section oftlie'frame I I iti's c'le'siralil'e' that the buffing or other 'wheelj'fi, ShO lildi nOt contact with the letters on the" matrices, means. are preferably'providedf for shielding the letters during the;
cleaning operation. -This: may conveniently be accomplishedby means of a rid 41,'pro 'vided witha series ofbai's 42, a a'pted to ex: ,tjeln dfover the line 'of' letters inheach' row of matrices as sh'o'wnfmore. particularly in s; grid is conveniently retained fidsition over the frame 30, by ineai'is'of depending flanges43, at each en'dandlug's at,each'side.:-Slots are formed in onset Upon this support 7 a table 24 or other with afianged head 37 forslidin engage? '36. Slots are also if arranged adjacent the centeriof each flange so that the latter may ofclamping screws 45.
The operation is as follows:
The screws 36.Of5th8-II12LtIlX frame 30, are loosened to draw backthe blocks 39. A sebe broughtlinto engagement with the heads riesof'mat'rices are then arranged in each section of the frame while the latter is rest-' ;.1ng onatable or other flat surface. Then 7 the screws 36, are tightened to clamp each row of matrices'in position. Next thegrid 41, is slid over the frame 31jand secured thereto by turningfthe screws 4: 5. The frame 30,:is then placedonthe table 24:, beneath the wheel'6 with its partitions thewheel and adjusted torthe proper'height by. means of the screw 21 ,Thefframe is then moved under the wheel, either by sliding it over the table. or'el'seby swingingthetable (35, substantially parallel totheplanefof 24 and bracket'l-l', about the standard 1. 7
After cleaningtheto'ps of the matrices, the
frame may beiturnedfoverl to clean the bottom. V 1 I am. aware that many changes maybe may be varied-fthrough; awide i range without departing froi'n-the principles of this made, and numerousdetails of construction invention, and- I therefore do 'not purp os'e" limiting] the patent? granted" hereon ,io'therwise than necessitatedby the prior art.
