To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, ROBERT W. CRANE, a citizen of the United States, residing at 117 lV. 25th St, Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention comprehends improvements in hinges, and has reference more particularly to that class thereunder known as door butt hinges, having for its object the provision of a hinge which is simple in construction, durable and efiicient in use, and one which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.

The primary object of the invention, resides in the provision of a hinge of the above stated character constructed of a pair of hingedly connected sections, each of which having its abutting edge so constructed to provide a stop; consequently prevent ing the door from breaking the interior frame work'or damaging or marring walls of dwellings- Furthermore, I aim in providing a hinge so designed and constructed to facilitate the reverse use thereof.

With the above and other objects in View, the invention consists in the novel features, details of construction, and combination of parts which will hereinafter be more fully set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the appended claim.

In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a horizontal sectional view through a portion of a door and its frame with the hinge shown in closed position;

Fig. 3 is a perspective illustrating the hinge removed from the door.

Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawing, the hinge is here denoted by the reference character 5, andoomprising a pair of hinge sections 6 and 7. Each section has its leaf portion provided with the usual suitable openings 8 through which pass fasteners for the connection of the sections with the respective jamb A'and door B of a dwelling. At this point, I desire to have it understood that the hinge is of the reversible type and facilitates the attachment of either of the leaves to the above specified portions of the dwelling, as the occasion may so demand.

Heretofore, it has been necessary to provlde a separate stop, usually secured interior of the dwellings, in the floor or base-boards thereof, to limit the opening movement of a door, in order that the latter be prevented from breaking the frame-work and damaging or marring the walk With this object in view, the hinge embodied in the application is primarily designed to obviate such objectionable features and is utilized as a door stop. To this end, the leaf or hinge section 6 is provided on its inner vertical flanged edge 9 at a point intermediate the ends thereof with a knuckle 10 while the flanged edge 11 of the hinge section 7, at points flush with the upper and-lower edges thereof is provided a pair of knuckles 12. The latter referred to knuckles are spaced from one another tojprovide therebetween an intervening space 13 onto which snugly fits the knuckle 10 of the hinge section 6, when said sections are hingedlyconnected to one another through the medium of the pintle pin 14 passing vertically through said knuckles. The vertical inner wall 15 of the flange 11 at a point between the spaced pair of knuckles is beveled as at 16 and likewise the inner surface of the flange throughout its entire length at points to the opposite ends of the knuckle 10 is beveled as at 17. The confronting face of each knuckle is correspondingly rounded or beveled as at 18, and adapted to coact or engage with the beveled surfaces of each flange, causing the limit opening swinging movement of the door, previous to the latters contact with the interior wall or woodwork of 'a dwelling.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of construction and the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates and while I have described the principles of operation of the invention,

' together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the appended claim.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is A hinge of the character set forth embodying two leaf sections, each of said sections being provlded wlth a flange on its inner vertlcal edge, one of said sections having an inner beveled face, a knuckle formed on said beveled face of the flange at a point intermediate the upper and lower endsv thereof, a pair of knuckles formed on the flange of the other leaf section providing therebetween an intervening. space into 10 which engagesthe knuckle of the first menof the second mentioned section at a point between the knuckles being beveled, each of the first and last mentioned knuckles being: correspondingly rounded or beveled to conform with the beveled confronting inner faces of the vertical flanges of said sections and engaging therewith.
