JULES L. sAeEr, of NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
' LADDER CONSTRUCTION.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that L'Jnnns L. SAGET, a citizen of'the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have inventednew and useful Improvements in Ladder Constructions, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention pertains to ladder constructions; and it consists in a combination ladder-4.0., a ladder capable of use as a selfsupporting ladder for general pur- V poses'and also capable of use in emergencies as a fire ladder designed and adapted to be propped against a building.
' One of the objects of the invention is the provision of a ladder possessed of the capacities stated embodying a construction that is simple'and strong and is susceptible of being manipulated and adjustably fixed without the employment of skilled labor or tools of any description v Another object of the invention is the provision of a combination ladder that is adapted to be readily and compactly folded after use as a self-supporting ladder, and transported on a hose-wagon or other vehicle, and then expeditiously and easily converted into a fire ladderthat is, a ladder of considerable length, made up of strongly connected sections and adapted to be propped against a building or otherwise maintained in substantially upright position. Manifestly my novel combination ladder char' acterized as stated can be used to advantage in those districts where conditions, are such as'not to justify the maintenance of a hook and ladder truck. g V
WVith the foregoing in mind, the invention will be fully understood from the following description and claim when the same are read in connection with the drawings, accompanying and forming part of this S138ClfiC21tlO11,'lT1 which: V
Figure 1 is abroken' side'elevation illus trating the upper portion of a self-support Specification of Letters Patenta Patented Aug. 17, 1920. Application filed March '16, 1918. Serial 110.222,?)44.
laddersarranged inparallelism, with a view to providing along ladder for fire purposes. Fig. 5 1s a' detail longitudinal section of thesame, showing the manner of connect ing the said. lapped or parallel sections and I strongly supporting the upper section on the lower section V Figs. 6 and 7 are transverse sections, taken in the planes indicated by-the lines '6-6 and 7-7, respectively of Fig-4, and showing the manner of holding the said sections to gether in lapped relation.
Fig.
ladder shown in Figs. '1' and 2-. v
Sim lar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts 1111, all of the views of the drawings."
I contemplate in pract ce employing two self supportingladders such as shown in Figs. 1 and 2' for general use, and also contemplate cOmbining the two when a long stra ght'ladder is to be provided, after the manner shown in Figs. 4i to 7, for fire purposes; The said ladders of the self-support mg type are identical in construction and therefore a detail description of the one shown in Figs. 1 and 2 will sufiice'to impart definite understanding of both. The selfsupporting ladder shown comprises sections 1 having flanges2 thereon and also having conventional or other {suitable rungs 3,
plates 4' fixed'to the upper ends of the side bars of the sections 1, one plate at each side of each side bar, and having angular ex- 7 8 is a broken elevation of one of the side props employed inthe self-supporting tensions 5 and also having key-holes 6, two
in each plate, keys 7 connected through chains or other cables 8 with the ladder sections 1 so as to form permanent parts thereof .and having bibs 9, turn-buckles 10 mounted at the outer sides of the side bars of the sections 1, links 11, preferably of metal, having slots 12 for the passage of the turn-buckles 10, and also having angularly-disposed ears 18 in which are keyholes 14, and side props 15, Figs. 1, 2 and 8, having keys 16 at their upper ends and prongs 17 at their lower ends, whereby they may be firmly fixed in the ground or upon an other surface.
Vith the ladder sections relatively arranged and adjustably fixed as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a strong and safe self-supporting ladder is afforded. When, however, it is desiredto convert the said self-sup porting ladder into a comparatively long straight ladder,the same may be readily accomplished by detaching the links 11 and the props 15 from the ladder sections and The side bars of one ,Of the ladder sections 1 shown in Figs. 1 and ,2 are provided near the lower ends with metallic clips20;
the said side bars being shown in inverted position in Figs. 1 and5. The side bars, 1 of .one ofthe ladder sections comprised in the complementary self-supporting, ladder are equipped with metallic clips 21; and the said clips 20 and 21 areadapted to, straddle the flanges 2 of the two sections when the same are in the lapped relation shown in Figs. 4 to 7, and thereby strongly hold the sections together in said relation, the spaced relation of the clips 21 with the side 1 being such as to permit the'cli-ps 20 to slide under the clips 21 for the removal of the section, It will also be noticed by comparison of Figs. {1: and 5 that the side bars of the ladder. section 1 are provided with swinging supports 21, of metal or other suitable material, and that each side bar isjprovided in its edge near its end with a recess or socket 22. Each of the said supports 21" is pivoted at 23 to the inner side of the adjacent side bar, and is slotted at124 to receive a limiting pin 25, and each is notched orprovided at 26 with a hook-to engage .and bear .on a rung of the other ladder section and thereby strongly support the ladder section 1 on such other ladder section. -Each support- 2lis moreover, provided with a portion 27 which is bent over the outer edge of the adjacent side bar and seated in the, notch, orsocket 22 thereof, and
is provided with a lateralextension form- 'ing a finger piece 28, whereby the support may be conveniently manipulated at the outer side-of the sidebar.
It will be gathered from the foregoing that two selfsupporting ladders such as disclosed herein maybe used to advantage for general purposes in the trades, and when an emergency arises each. self-supporting ladder may be veryquickly convert ed into a comparatively long straight ladder, see Fig. 3, and when a very long lad.- der is necessary, ,as'in the event offire, ,the two comparatively long straight ladders may be combined and joined together, after the manner shown'in Figs. .l-to 7. 7 It will and that it embodies no delicate parts such as are likely to getiout of order afterashort 7 period of use.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent,is: 1 1
In a ladder, the combination of ladder sections hinged at their upper ends,- turn keys arranged on the sides of .the sections,
links having slots formed on theirends that receive the keys of the sections and also having members secured to .the center of the links, and ears formed on the lower end of said members and haying apertures therein, and laterally extending props haying ends adapted to enter said apertures. j r
In testimony whereof'l have hereunto set my hand in presence of two -.subsc,rib ing witnesses.
v j J SAGET.
