,vented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates generally to toys,

and more particularly to what might be termed a toy mortar, in the use of which an article is discharged from a barrel by the explosion of a charge.

The invention has for an object to provide a device in which a projectile is discharged vertically into the air in a novel manner and is arranged to be visible as it descends.

For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims III wh ch the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

Figure l of the drawings is a side elevation of a toy constructed according to my invention.

As here shown my improved toy comprises a barrel 1 having one end open and the opposite end closed by a solid head 2. This barrel is adapted to inclose freely the solid. cylindrical head 3 of the projectile, the body of which is constituted by a rigid rod 4 to which the head is fixed, the barrel 1 being preferably somewhat longer than the projectile. Upon this rod 4 is mounted a parachute 5.

As here shown the parachute is secured at its edges by cords 6 to a conical collar 7 fixed on the rod 4 a short distance above the head 3 and has a small central aperture 8 through which the rod 4: passes freely. Fixed upon the rod 4 at a point between the upper and lower ends thereof is a disk 9 Specification 'of Letters Patent.

having a rounded top face, this disk being located the proper distance above the head 3 to have the lower edge of the parachute when the latter is folded project slightly into the open upper end of the barrel 1, this lower edge, however, being preferably spaced a short distance upwardly from the head 3 and downwardly from the collar 7.

The manner of using my toy is as follows: A percussion cap 10, of the type commonly used in toy pistols, is placed in the barrel 1 and the head 3 of the projectile is inserted on top of the cap. The parachute is folded and the lower edge tucked into the barrel and the toy is then dropped on a suitable hard surface, the head 3 striking the cap 10 and exploding the latter and causing the projectile to be discharged into the air. As the projectile starts to fall the parachute opens and retards its descent.

As will be apparent, any chance of the parachute opening when the toy is dropped is prevented by reason of the bottom thereof being inserted in the upper end of the barrel, while the conical collar, by directing the air outwardly against the parachute when the projectile starts to fall, acts to cause the latter to open quickly. The head 3 may be made to fit in the barrel 1 with suiiicient frictional hold to retain it in place when the device is suspended by grasping the upper end of the rod 4.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows:

1. A toy comprising a barrel having one end open and the other end closed, a projectile adapted to rest freely in said barrel, a parachute carried by said projectile, said parachute being bodily adjustable lengthwise of the said projectile.

'2. A toy comprising a barrel having one end open and the other end closed, a cylindrical member adapted to rest freely in said barrel, a rod fixed at its lower end to said cylindrical member, and a parachute mounted upon said rod.

3.
