AUTOMATIC CONTROL-VALVE.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES M. CAMMAox, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York,-h.ve invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Control-Valves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to automatic control valves and its object is to afford protection for the diaphragm operating to close an opening by means of pressure or heat. The diaphragm usually employed in these valves must necessarily be of a thin and easily destroyed material and certain means are employed in the present invention for protecting the diaphragm from undue heat, moisture or gases, as will be more fully described in the following specification, set forth in the claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
A vertical longitudinal sectional view is shown of the improved valve.
It has heretofore been the practice in the locating of regulating valves, which automatically close supply pipes, to expose the diaphragm to the action of a fluid adapted at certain times to exert a pressure. These diaphragms are necessarily of thin metal or they are a sheet of flexible material The latter is soon impaired by certain liquids and gases while the metal is also subject to corrosion and destruction by the same agents.
The drawing, which shows such a valve, comprises a ring 10 having exterior threads 11 and a flange 10 and is adapted to be screwed into the wall of a tank, boiler orv heater and its inner end is preferably open so the fluid in the said container may influence the parts of the valve. To the outside of the flange 10 is secured the flange 14 of a cap 12 and the two flanges carry between them the edges of a diaphragm 13 that is normally dished inward but thin enough to yield to any pressure from within the ring 10 and be forced outward.
The cap 12 has an inlet 15 and outlet 16, the former being within the two nipples 17 and 18, the former extending into the cap and in proximity to the diaphragm so that the latter when forced outward by the interior pressure will close the end of that nipple, and the nipple 18 has an outside thread for a coupling and an inside thread for a nut 22 with polygonal opening 23 for a wrench or key to adjust the same.

Within the nipple 17 is inclosed a spring 21 bearing at one end on the diaphragm and at the other on the nut 22 and in order to provide more or less resistance to any pressure on the diaphragm, this nut 22 is accordingly adjusted.
The edges of the diaphragm are provided with gaskets 19 and its outer face is sheathed with a covering 29 of some flexible, acid proof material such as rubber, to form an eflicient closure with the end 20 of nipple 17 and to protect that face from injurious gases and vapors that may be passing through the cap 12.
The diaphragm is necessarily made of a resilient material such as bronze or steel and these materials are easily influenced and deteriorated by most of the gases in common use.
The valve is primarily intended to be interposed in a gas supply pipe for burners to heaters and where the connections of the pipe are made at 18 and 16. If a certain amount of steam is generated in the heater its pressure influences the diaphragm and the inlet is entirely closed or partly so to decrease the flow of gas to the burners and the consequent generation of steam. By properly adjusting the screw 22 the pressure of the spring 21 may be finely graded so that a certain pressure of steam may be maintained regularly by the amount of fuel gas permitted to pass through the valve.
It is obvious that other arrangements of the parts or modifications may be resorted to without departing from the essential features above described or from the scope of the appended claim.
lVhat I claim as new is:
In an automatic control valve, the combination of a ring adapted to be screwed into the wall of a fluid container and having a flange on its outer edge, a diaphragm covering the outer end of the ring, a cap attached to the flange and securing the diaphragm, a nipple constituting the inlet at the inner face of the cap and impinging the diaphragm when pressure is put on the inner side of the latter, a spring within the nipple and bearing on the diaphragm, a nut in the nipple to adjust the pressure of the spring, and a protecting surface on the diaphragm.
