PROTECTOR FOR SEWEBS OF ENGINE CINDER-PITS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 1'7, 1920.
Application filed November 5, 1919. Serial No. 335,919.
1 '0 all who 1nd may concern:
lie it known that I, THOMAS RILEY, a citizen of the United States, resident of Oelwein, in the county of Fayette and State of Iowa, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Protectors for Sewers of Engine finder-Pits; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appcrtains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The figure is a perspective view partly broken away of the invention, as applied.
The invention has relation to means for preventing cindersgmud and ashes from ac clunulating over and choking the mouths of sewers of engine cinder pits of round houses, and it consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention, the numeral 2 designates the engine cinder pit, having side and end walls 3, and 4; is a horizontal grating, covering the sewer mouth, and located at one end oi said pit, the latter having an inclined bottom 5, leading to the sewer.
In practice, cinder-s, mud and ashes aecumulate in the pit and finding their way to the grating over the sewer mouth, collect thereupon and choke the grating, so that it becomes rather frequently necessary to remove this accumulation in order that the sewer shall act.
further guard or grating whereon cinders, mud and ashes may bank up at a point removed from theihorizontal grating, thereby ordinarily preventing collection of cinders, etc. upon the horizontal grating; and in case mud, ashes or fine stuff should sift through the additional grating over the horizontal grating and fail to pass through the latter to the sewer, opportunity is afforded for a workman to take a position over the hori zontal grating and shovel away this accumulation to clear the way to the sewer.
This additional guard consists of an inclined grating 6 spanning the pit between the side walls thereof and located at one side of the horizontal grating l, being spaced apart therefrom at 7, the inclined grating being of finer mesh, about one half that of the horizontal grating 4, and being supported upon askeleton frame 8, the sides or ends 8' of which are in abutting relation to the side walls of the pit.
I claim The combination with an engine cinder pit, having side and end walls, and a sewer opening at one end thereof, of a horizontal grating located over the mouth of the sewer and on a levelwith the floor of the pit, and an inclined grating of finer mesh than said horizontal grating and located transversely of the pit at one side of said horizontal grating, the latterhaving a space thereover adapted for a workman to take place unobstructed by said inclined grating.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS RILEY.
