Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES NORTON, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN SOLDERlNG-IRONS.
Specification fonning part of Letters Patent N0. 134,923, dated January 14, 1873.
T0 all whom it ma-y cmwern:
Be it known that I, JAMES D. NORTON, of St. Louis, in the county 0f St. Louis und State of Missouri, have invented a new anduseful lmprovement in Soldering-Irons, 0f which the following is a specification:
'lhe object of this inve;ntion is to improve ehe common tinners soldering-iron, an l to render it easy to renew 01' change the copper;' and it; consists in a shank which screws int0 the copper, und in a sleeve-"screw which screws onto the copper, and in a holding-nut on the shank, as will be hereina fter described.
In the accompanying drawing,Figure 1 repres'ents a longitudinal section 0f my improved soldering-iron, showing the' ordinary pointed copper. Figs. 2 aiid 3 represent: coppers 0f ditferent; forms detacl;ed from the sh ank. Fi g. 4 is a perspective view of the case for keeping the improved soldering:iron and a variety of coppers t0 suit; diffierenl: kinds 0f work.
Similar letfqers of refere nee indicate corresponding parts.
Arepresents tl1e gopper. B is the shank which screws into tl1e copper, aus seen in Fig.l. C is a sleeve-serew 011 the shank which screws onto the end of the copper, as repre-v sented. D is a nut 011 the shank which screws up against the sleeve. The sleeve' 0 may work on a screwthread 0n the shank 01' slide 011, as may be desired. I prefer to sorew it; on. Tl1e small nufi D will hold it in place and keep the connection seeure in either case. E represents the handle.
By this arrangemeut a varietjy of coppers may be kept 011 band and used as occasion may require, as the copper 011 the snank is readily detached, so thata a new one. 0r a different one may be put 011 als any time.
Having thus described my invention, I cla-im as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The internally-threaded copper A. having threaded shank, the end-threaded shank B, the sleeve-screw O, and the nut D, all combined, construeted, am]; arranged. as and for the purpose described.
JAMES D. NORTON.
