PENNSYLVANIA.
STGCKING-HOLDING DEVICE.
T all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK J. Asn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Phoenixville, in the county of Chester and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stocking-Holding Devices, of which the following is a specification.
t is well known that in the manufacture of stockings that the stockings are often placed upon forms or boards inorder to set the shaoe of the stockings and the stockings are often steamed or moistened and permitted to dry on the forms so that they will be of a standard size'and shape and free of irre ularities. stockings upon said forms or boards they often creep up on the forms or boards, due to shrinkage and variation in tension of the yarn constituting the same. One object of my invention is to provide means which can be easily operated in order to hold or clamp the stockings to said forms or boards so that during the drying process, the stockings will not creep upwardly thereon or dry in irregular shapes.
Another object is tomake my invention of a imple and durable construction and so that it can be released by the pressure of the bot y or leg of an operator so that the hands of the operator are free to position the stocking on the board or remove the same therefrom.
These objects. and other advantageous ends which will be described hereinafter, I attain in the folio manner, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a side elevation showing my invention in an open position so as to permit a stocking to be placed on a form or reioved therefrom,
Fig. 2 is a view of similar nature to Fig. 1 showing my invention automatically moved into a position clamping or holding a stocking to the form,
Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view taken on the line of Fig. 2,
Fig. s is a front elevation of Fig. 2,
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary sectional elevation taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4:,
Fig. 6 is an enlarged fragmentary elevation taken on the line 6-6 of Fig. 5, and
Fig. 7 is a fragmentary elevation showing a portion of my invention.
Referring to the drawings, 8 represents Specification of Letters Patent.
During the drying of the Patented A11 10, 1920.
Application filed July 21, 1919. Serial No. 312,112.
a supporting structure in the form of a table top to which is secured a stocking form 9 which, in the present instance, is made in the form of a thin hollow casting and is supplied. with steam through a steam pipe 10 which leads into said, form. Thus the form 9 is heated and stockings, such for example as the stocking shown at 11, can be slipped over the top of said form and downwardly so to be stretched on said form for drying and setting purposes as above noted.
lily i vention includes a clamping band 12 which is preferably made of resilient sheet metal and a screw or bolt 13 is proviced so that when the latter is tightened, the clamping band will be firmly secured around the form 9. A plate 14: is secured to one end of the band 12 and has an upright slot therein and a pivot hole 16 adjacent its top and above the slot 15. Two arms 1? and 18 are pivotally connected together between their ends by a pivot pin 19, said pivot pin extending through the pivot hole 16 in the plate The lower ends of the arms 17 and 18 are respectively pivoted to the upper ends of two links 20 and 2i; said links also being pivoted together by a pin 22 which extends through the slot in the plate let. The link 20 extends below the pivot pin 22 and is pivotally connected to another link 2%. The link 2% is inclined and at its lower end is pivotally connected at 25 to a rod 26; said rod being slidable in brackets 27 secured on the table top 8. A push plate 28 is mounted on the outer end of the rod 26 and a coiled spring 29 is connected to the pivot pin 22 to the table top 8, said spring serving to move the pin downwardly within the slot 15, thereby tending to push the rod 26 and push plate 28 outwardly and at the same time pull the links 20 and 21 downwardly to cause the arms 1'? and 18 to move toward each other or in other words from the position shown in Fig. 1 to the position shown in Fig. 2. Each of the arms 17 and 18 has a perforated plate or jaw 30 secured thereto and these jaws 30. due to the action of he spring 29, move into engagement with the lower portion of the stocking 11 on the form 9 and securely hold said portion of the stocking to the form 9. As illustrated, the form 9 is substantially elliptical in cross section. as clearly shown in Fig. 3 and the jaws 30 are curved so as to follow the contour of the outer opposite faces of the form.
By having the jaws 30 perforated, any moisture from the stocking can pass out through the perforations so as to permit the clamped or held portion of oughly dried.
The links 20, 21 and 24 and the lower portions of the arms l7'and 18 provide a togslide within the slot 15 jaws 30 areheld apart, the
gle connection so that when the plate 28 is pushed from the position shown in Fig. 2 to the position shown in Fig. l, the pin 22 will toward the pivot pin This action will cause the links and 17 and 18 and thereby remove the jaws 30 from the stocking 11. By placing the plate 28 adjacent the edge of the table top 8, said plate canbe pushed by the leg or body of an operator and the hands of the operator will be free to manipulate the stocking l1. Thuswhile the stocking can be placed upon the form or removed therefrom 19. 21 to spread the arms I and when pressure is released from the push plate 28, the spring 29 will serve to close the jaws 30 and move them into clamping engagement with the stocking on the form, thereby holding said stocking in position while the latter is drying.
Vhile I have described my invention as taking a particular form, it will be understood that the various parts of my invention may be changed without departing from thespiritthereof, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction set fortln'but consider that I am at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A device of the character described i11- cluding a stocking form; two arms pivotally connected together between their ends; two links directly pivoted together and respectively pivoted to adjacent ends of said arms; means' for moving said links together and apart on their pivots whereby said are moved on their pivots to move their opposite ends toward and from opposite faces of saidform; and means for guiding the the stocking to be thor way for said pivot pivotal connections of said arms to control the movement of said links; substantially as described. 7
2. The combination of a stocking form; two arms pivotally connected together; jaws on said arms; links; a pivot pin connecting said links; means providing a guide pin; means pivotally connecting said links to said. arms; and means for moving said pivot pin in said guideway away from said pivotal connection of the arms,'whereby said jaws are moved into engagement with opposite portions of a stocking placed on said form; substantially as described.
3. The combination of a stocking form; two arms pivotally connected together; jaws on said arms; links; a pivot pin connecting said links; means providing a guideway for said pivot pin; means pivotally connecting said links to said arms; means for moving said pivot pin in said guideway away from said pivotal connec= tion of the arms, whereby said jaws are moved into engagement with opposite portions of a stocking placed on said form; a push rod andmeans operatively connecting said push rod with said links whereby when said rod is pushed, the links will be spread apart andthereby move said arms and jaws apart; substantially as described.
4:. The combination of a stocking form; a plate having a slot and a pivot hole therein; a supporting structure; two arms; a pivot pin pivotally connecting said arms and extending through said pivot hole in the plate; links pivotally connected to said arms; a pivot pin pivotally connecting said links together and slidable in said slot; and means for moving said pivot pin within said slot towardand away from said first pivot pin whereby said arms are moved toward and from'said form; substnatially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FREDERICK J. ASH.
