Description

J. J. BOWES, IR.
TUBE COMPRESSOR.
APPLICATION FILED AUG-1511919.
1,347,953 1 Patented July 27, 1920.
W/T/VESSES INVENTOR Arm/mars JOHN J. BOW-ES, an, or PENSACOLA,. FLORIDA.
PATENT. OFFICE- TUBE-COMPRESSOR.
' T all'wkom arm aware; I
'Be it-known that I, 'Jojrnv J. Bowns, J r., a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pensacola, in the county of Escambia and State of'Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tube-Compressors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in tube compressors, and has for its object to provide a device of the character specified, adapted for compressing a flexible tube to prevent the flow of liquid therethrough, as for instance the tube of a syringe, wherein the arrangement is such that the tube will be eliiciently clamped shut, assuring a water tight closure, without undue wear on the tube.
A further object is to provide mechanism in connection with the compressor for permitting the pressure to be relaxed to permit a limited flow, as for instance in the Murphy drip treatment.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the blank from which the improved compressor is formed,
Fig. 2 is a side view showing the compressor closed on a tube,
Fig. 3 is a side view of the clamp open,
Fig. at is a top plan View of the compressor,
Figs. 5 and 6 are plan and side views respectively of the lower gripping jaw,
Figs. 7 and S are top plan and side views of the controlling lever.
In the present embodiment of the invention .the improved compressor is formed from a blank like that shown in Fig. 1. This blank as shown is composed of a ring 1 having radial extensions 2 and 3, extending in opposite directions from the ring and the extension 2 has pairs of lugs 4 and 5, the members of each pair extending in opposite directions from the edges of the extension, the lugs 5 being perforated. The extension 3 has a pair of lugs 6, the members ofthe pair extending in opposite direction from the extension as shown, the lugs being similar, and each having its outer edge 7 serrated to form ratchet teeth.
The blank is bent so that the extensions 2 and 3 overlie each other in spaced parallel- Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J 11y 27, Application filed August 15, 1919. Serial No. 317,773.
bent toward the extension 2, tolie on oppotension 2" are bent away'from. the extension 3, to provide a pivotalmounting fora fingerpiece 9.
As shown in Figs. 7 and 8 this fingerpiece has oppositely extending lugs 10 which are pivoted in the openings of the lugs 5, and it has other lugs 11 which are adapted to engage the ratchet teeth 7 of the lugs G,
to hold the finger-piece in adjusted position. The finger-piece is also provided with a plate spring 12, secured thereto at one end, the other end of the spring engaging the extension 2 to normallyhold the lugs 11 in engagement with the ratchet teeth.
This extension 2 has a transverse rib 13 intermediate its ends, and on the face adjacent to the tube 8, and at the lugs 4:,- and it is this rib that engages the tube to clamp the same. A gripping jaw 14 is connected to the extension 3 near its junction with the ring 1, the said jaw having a pin 15 which engages an opening in the extension 3, and the opposite end of the jaw has a cross head 16 which is curved as shown in Fig. 6,in the opposite direction to the rib 13,. and this curve or rib 16 cooperates with the rib 13 to grip the tube 8. A set screw 17 is threaded through the extension 3, and engages the jaw 14 at its inner end. Bymeans of the set screw pressure of the jaw 16 on the tube may be nicely regulated. With'the parts in the position of Fig. 2, itwill be obvious that by loosening the set screw a slight opening of the tube may be brought about and this opening may be made to any extent desired. 7
In use the compressor is arranged upon the tube as shown in Fig. 2, with the tube 1. The extensions 2 and 3 are at this time in the position shown in Fig. 3, that is thelugs 11 which are bent outwardly as shown in Fig. 8 are disengaged from the ratchet teeth, and the'extension 2 is at its farthest point from the extension 3, the upward movement of the extension being limited by struck-up spurs 18 on the lug 6. To compress the tube, the extensions 2 and 3 are moved toward each other. In order to move then; toward each other they may be grasped between'the thumb and finger at their tree ends. As they are moved toward each other, the lugs 11 will slip idly-over the ratchet teeth, but will hold the extensions from movement away from each other. Inorder to permit a drip of fluid from the tube, that is a limited flow, the set screw 17 maybe purpose speci V 2. A device of the character specified, com prising a pair of gripping ,,jaws spring pressed away from each otherfmea'ns in conturned to relax the pressure of the jaw 14:. I claim: 5 I i 1. A device of the character specified, corn-- 7 prising a strip doubled upon itself to lie on opposite sides of a tube at its ends and having a central opening for receiving the tube, one of the ends havingratchet teeth and the other a spring controlled latch en; gaging the teeth for holding the said ends clamped on the tube, the other of the said ends having an auxiliary gripping jawon .the inner face thereof for directly engaging the tube, and a set screw threaded through the said end eftind engaging the jaw for the 'nection with the jaws for clamping said aws against movement away from each other, one of said: jaws havingan' auxiliary gripping member "adjustable toward and.
