IMPROVEMENT IN GUN-SIGHTS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 134,772, dated January 14, 18 73.

Be it known that we, HERRMAN A. SGHOTT- KY and THEODORE SIMENDINGER, of the city and'county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sight for Fire-Arms; and we do hereby declare the following to be'a full, clear, and

exact description thereof, which will enable.

those skilled in the art to make and'use the same, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawing forming part'of this specification, in which drawing- Figure 1 represents an end view of our improvement applied to a gun, the barrel being in cross-section and Fig. 2 is a vertical section of our invention, the barrel of the gun being omitted from the view.

This invention relates to movable sights for fire=arms; and consists of a drop-sight projecting from above into an open ring arranged at the proper point upon the barrel of a gun at right angles to its axis, the sight consisting of a head formed at the bottom of a needlelike adjustable pointer, which projects down from the end of a threaded shank contained in a threaded socket set vertically on the top of the ring. The upper end of the threaded shank is squared to fit a key, so that by insertiug the key into the upper end of the socket the shank can be screwed up or down, and the head of the sight be thereby moved to a higher or lower position within the ring. The rear side of the upright socket is provided with a scale for the adjustment of the sight, and the same side is slotted vertically to allow an index from the screw-shank to project through it, said index projecting from a collar placed loosely on a reduced part of the shank, and kept from moving lengthwise thereon by a confining-collar.

The letter A designates the barrel of a gun,

on the upper side of which we mount a ring,

B, arranged at right angles to the axisrof the barrel. Upon the top of the ring B 'we fix an upright socket, 0, provided with an internal screw-thread, and graduated on its rear face by a scale, D, for adjusting the elevation of the sight. The graduated face or side of the socket has also a vertical slot, E. The socket C is open at both ends, and communicates with a hole through the top of the ring. Within the socket is a screw-threaded shank, F, from the lower end of which projects a fine pointer, G, tapering downward, which extends into the ring, and carries at its extremity a small head, H, that constitutes the sight proper. The sight is raised or lowered by turning the screwthreaded shank in its socket, which is accomplished by means of a key-wrench, I, applied to the upper end of the shank, which is made square for that purpose.

The position of the sight with reference to the scale on the socket is ascertained by means of an index, J, whose inner end is formed with an eye that fits loosely over the upper reduced end of the shank F, where it is confined by a collar, K, so that it cannot move lengthwise of the shank, although the shank is free to turn within it.

What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a gun-sight, the combination, with a ring, B, providedwith a socket, C, of the sight H, adapted to be raised and lowered by a shank, F, substantially as described.

2. In combination with the foregoing, the

index J and graduated scale D, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
