Description
C. MULLEBL PISTON GROOVING TOOL. APPLICATION .HLED APR. 9, 1919.
1,346,838. Patented My 20, 1926'.
, purpose UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.-
CHRISTIAN MULL R, or FALL RIVER, MASSACHUSETTS.
PISTON-GROOVING TOOL.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN MULLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fall River, county of Bristol, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Piston-Grooving Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to grooving tools and particularly to a regrooving tool for the channels of engine pistons and the ,The difficulty of setting up pistons in a lathe andin fact the frequent-lack of an available lathe for such has made the matter of fitting new rings to pistons an expensive and annoyingincident especially to owners in the upkeep of their automobiles.
It is therefore highly desirable that the ordinary'garage or repairman have some means for regrooving pistons for the fitting of piston rings which can be depended uponfor service without too much disassembling of the parts of the motor and without too muchdependence upon highly skilledlabor.
To the end therefore of providing-a tool capable of such uses, I have devised my present invention. In this I have provided an' xtremely simple and inexpensive and yet highly 'eilicient tool capable of operation lw the average mechanic. In many cases this tool can be employed without completely removing the piston and without removing the connectingrod from the piston. The
construction and operation of my tool will he more fully described in the specification which follows.
Tu the accompanying drawings I have shown an embodiment which have found well adapted to the ends sought and which will regroove pistons rapidly and accurately so that 'stamlard piston rings may be applied without delay and .at little cost.
'lhroughout the specification and drawings like reference numeralsare employed ilO'lIldicate corresponding parts.- In the drawings:
Figure l is a side elevation of a tool in aeem'daime with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a central sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 a plan View.
I Fig. 4- a fragmentary detail of a portion of the inner face of my tool, and

properly centering and I My tool comprises a flexible bearing band comprising a flex ble base segment 1, a pair Specifieationef Letters Patent.' 7 Patented J l 20 1920 Application filed April 9 19. Serial No. 288,7 64r I v I of detachable adjustable segments 2 and 3 which are also preferably flexible. The sec- .tion 1 is provided with a short curved.
bracket 4: suitably welded or riveted to the sect on 1. On the bracket is a splitclamp member 5 set up 'by'a screw 6 passing through opposedears and adjustably gripping a. tool holder having a squared cut-- ting tool 8. The member 1 isopened at 9 'for observation of the groove G of the .pis-
ton Pr The'members 2 and Bare detachably connected to .the section lby hooked shaped portions.2- 3 engaging. with reversibly hooked portlons 1 Attheir opposed ends' the seetions, 2 and 3, are providev with outturned portions forming ears which may be.
set up bya wing nut 10 on "a threaded stem 11. l The out-t urned portion of the member; 2 may be carr ed out and rolled in a handle on grip l2. 7
The members 2 and 3 are also provided with elongated cam guiding members 13, the
stems of which pass through the members 2and 3, and through split clamp members 14 mounted on the outer faces of the sections 2 and 3.
guiding members 13 may beadjhsted to The stems of the cam 13 are pro-- snugly fit within the grooves G of the piston:
ring for steadying the tool on the piston.
In operation my tool is set up with segy ments 2 and '3 of proper length to snugly fit the diameter of the piston and the tool 8 is inserted inthe groove to-be re-eut; The wing nut 10 having been set up with the cams 13 also in the groove andwith the hand portion of the tool snugly but movably embracingthe piston, the cams 13 are set transversely in the groove so as to provide a steadying bearing at two points opposite to the tool 8. The tool 8 is now turned within the groove of the piston until its edgesbegin to take on the worn edges of the groove.
The tool 8 with its holder 7 is now rotated on the piston until the groove has been cut all the way around and'is then clamped in place. The tool 8 may be fed in or further rotated on its axis to give a wider out if necessary -to complete the rectification .of the-groove walls' or their enlargement to receive 'the particular size of ring which it is wished to V insert.
.Various modifications :may obviously be made in the construction and arrangement of arts. The tool holder may be modified an the form and arrangements of the segments may be varied, as also their number. All these and various other departures from 5 the particular form shown may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention if within the limits of the appended claim.
What I therefore claim and desire to se- 1 0 cure by Letters Patent is:
A'regrooving tool for pistons, comprising 7 a piston encircling guidemember, a tool radially and rotatably adjustable therein CHRISTIAN MULLER.
