This invention is for improvements in or relating to beaded strips of metal and to the process of rolling the same and is particularly applicable to the rims of wheels for aircraft where lightness is of considerable importance, and which wheels are to receive pneumatic tires.

For this purpose it is necessary to employ steel which is very soft, otherwise it will crack where it is folded, and the thicker the metal the more liableit is to crack.
The object of the present invention is to enable the edges of a strip to be thickened without folding them back in this manner, so that a harder steel can be employed and a stilfer rim or strip produced for a given.
It has before been proposedto provide a strip of steel for rim-making with thickened edges by hot rolling to produce a flat strip with the said thickened edges, but the strip so produced varies .more or less in width.
The process for producing a strip with thickened edges according to this invention consists'in (a) passing a flat strip between rollers to bend it into channel-form and .(b)
passing it between other rollers which the metal between them as arranged for making a wheel-rim strip;

The metal strip 0 is thus kept fiat across the greater part of its width but is bent up at the edges providing an angle C The strip is assed from the rollers A B to the rollers D shown in Fig. 2. In these rollers, not only an oblique step D is provided, but also a vertical step D so that the metal C has a second angle formed at C which brings the part that lies beyond the angle C into a perpendicular position relatively to. the main body of the strip.
In the third pair of rollers, the roller E which cooperates with the roller E is pro vided with steps E and E which lie at the same angles as the steps I) D but the step E is shortened and widened, with the result that the metal at each edge of the strip 0 is crushed inward toward the main body of the metal and allowed to swell laterally outward providing the thickened edges C In the fourth pair of rolls, this crushing is carried a step farther, the rolls F and F providing a still shorter step at F the width of the space provided by this step being still wider than the corresponding step in the rolls E E so that the edges of the strip C are still farther crushed inward and swelled laterally as shown at C still to give the same general form an Preferably the strip for treatment accord ing to this process has sheared edges to insure uniformity in the width.
The further shaping of the rim may beeffected in known manner and constitutes no part of the present invention. The complete rim is shown in Fig. 5, where the thickened edges C are shown bent inward to the position they assume for receiving the tire. The rim shown is tied in laterally by ties C to prevent outwarddisplacement of the edges under pneumatic pressure.
An important practical feature of the present invention lies in the fact that the edges of the rimwhich are to be crushed in are brought to such a position that they lie radially to the axes of the rollers when they are being crushed inward to thicken them.
Figs. 6 to 9 show the process and means 'for producing a fiat strip having beaded or thickened edges, which edges are produced in the same manner as already described by crushing the edges inward, this strip, however, being serviceable for. any desired purpose and not restricted in its useto wheel'rims. The strip in this case is not bent angularly at any point but is bent into U-shaped channel-form, as shown in Fig. 6, the rollers G and G being shaped to give this form to the strip.
In Fig. 7, the rollers G and G are sha ed to fit the strip at all parts except at the edges H where space is allowed so that the edges are crushed inward and spread laterally as shown in the figure.
In Fig. 8, the rollers G and G areshaped to still further crush the edges H The strip is then finished and can be made into any desired form or flattened out as shown 'at H Fig. 9, the flattening being effected by passing it between other rollers as will be readil understood.
What claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The method of forming a shape having a reinforced flange, comprising the steps of rolling a blank and engaging the main portion of the body thereof between the rolls of a roll pass to retain it against lateral displacement, and upsetting the edge of the blank in said pass to increase the thickness thereof, substantially as described.
2. The'method of forming a metal shape having a reinforced flange, comprising the steps of rolling an angular blank and en gaing the main portion of the body thereof between the rolls of a roll pass to retain it against lateral displacement, and. upsetting the edge of the blank to increase the thickness thereof, substantially as described.
3. The method of forming a shape having reinforced flanges, comprising the steps of rolling a channel shaped blank and engaging the main portion of the body thereof between the rolls of a roll pass to retain it against lateral displacement, and upsetting the edges of the blank while traveling through said pass to increase ,thethickness thereof, substantially as described.
4E. The method of producing thickened edges on a metal strip, which 'comprises bendingthe strip into channel form having substantially vertical sides, tightly engaging said member throughout the main portion thereof while leaving a portion of the vertical sides free, and then vertically upsetting the free portion of said sides to simultaneously decrease the height thereof and increase the thickness, substantially as described.
