gentina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Windows, of which the following is a specification- This invention relates to certain improvements in windows and its object is the provision of certain special means in combination with the window sashes and frames in order that the windows may be easily opened or closed.
The invention relates more specitically to the type of windows in which the sashes are vertically superposed, but it is obvious that my improvements may be also used in connection with windows in which the sashes are disposed of side by side, as will be clearly understood from the following description.
The main feature of my present invention consists in the fact that the entire window sash and its adj oining elements are rendered capable of an automatic raising or lowering by a combination of supporting devices-of which one is a pivot member and the other 01' others are sliding supports guided by suitable means provided on the window case or substantially in the same plane as the window case,-that is to say, each of the Window sashes and its supporting means are always characterized by the fact that the sash has a pivotal movement about a fixed axis and one or more parts which slide alon fixed guides, the said axis and guides being ocated on the window case or adjoining such window case in substantially the same plane as said case.
In order that it may becle'arly understood and easily carried into practice, my invention has been illustrated in the accompanying drawings which show, in a more or less diagrammatic manner, some of the preferred embodiments of the same and in which similar characters of reference relate to the same or like parts throughout the severalviews.

Specification of Letters Patent.

In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1, 1 is a window sash resting on pivots 2 at the ends of the supporting arms 3, said arms being pivoted at the opposite ends on a pivot rod 4 fixed in the window case 5. The upper end of sash 1 is provided with studs or journals 14 which are adapted to slide in guides 6; this sliding movement takes place in an upward or downward dil'ection depcnding on the upward or downward displaccment of the center of gravity of the window sash. A second rod or arm 7 is linkcd at H to each arm 3, the opposite end of said arm T having a stud or journal 14' to slide in a second guide 9.
The position of the pivotal point 2 with respect to the center of gravity of the window sash determines the automatic ('losing or opening of the sash and this displacement being reduced to a minimum, the respective movements take place smoothly and only a small effort is required in order to produce the opposite movement.
This opposite movement may be obtained, for instance, by means of a rope or chain 10, which is carried over a pulley 11 fixed tc the Window case and over a second pulley 12 fixed to the upper end of the window sash, the end of the rope or chain being;r finally fixed to a point 13 of the sash, conveniently outside the pivot point 2.
By pulling down the rope or chain 10 the sash is raised and the studs14 slide upward in guides 6, the window sash rocking. on pivots 2. The free end of the sash comes thus down until a perfect closure is effected. At the same time the arm or rod 7 turns upward on link 8 and its free end 14' slides in guide 9.
If the window is closed and the rope or chain 10 set free, there being` always a small eccentricity between the points 2 and 4, the sash will tend to fall outward on account of 'gravity and the series of movements described will take place inversely. The sash will open up to the position shown in Fig. 1.
The window sash may'be operatively connected with one or more similar sashes, as shown in said Fig. 1. To this end it is sufficient to connect corresponding points of two or more sashes of the same window.
In the embodiment shown. this connection takes place between two sashes by coupling two corresponding points 15 on the two sashes with each other by means of rods 10, and by connecting the two arms 7 by simihu' rous 17. As may be easily understooa, the sashes may be actuated simultaneously by pressing or pulling upon the parts 10 or 1.7, or on any other point of the system, for instance, on the sash 1.
It is obvious that according to my resent invention, all the sashes of a win ow or only some of them, adj oining or not, may be operatively connected.
Fig. 2 shows another embodiment of my present invention., In this case, the window sash has a tendency to oA en on account of gravity. The closing is e ected bypushing upward the sash. 4 is the pivot at the upper end of arm 3, which arm is connected at 2 with the window sash 1.
Figs. 3 and 4 show another embodiment of the invention, with the window sashes open and closed respectively. The opening of the window sash takes place due to grav-l ity and the closingz,r is efi'ected by pulling on i'opes 10 which are carried over the pulleys 20. lVhen pulling on either rope 10, points "3 move in a direction toward 20, and the studs 14 travel in the guides 6. The window sash rocks on 2 and passes to the Vertical closed position, as shown in Fig. 4.

In the embodiments shown and described, the window; sashes may be operatively connected in any convenient order, as specified with reference to F ig. 1.
The invention is not limited to the specific forms as illutrated` and described, and any other form may be adopted within the scope of the following claim.

What I claim is:
