To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PATRICK MACK CANTY, a citizen of the United States, and
a resident of Altoona, inthe county of Blair and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in' Flue-Extractors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to flue extractors. I
An important object of my invention is to provide a flue extractor which will so effectively and powerfully engage the flue that the enormous pulling force necessary to withdraw the flue may be applied.
Another important object is to provide a flue extractor with guiding means for the gripping elements thereof which will constrain the gripping elements to move in such manner and to such positions as to be most effective to the end of securely gripping the flue. I r
Another important object is to provide means for positively withdrawing the grlpping elements from engagement with the flue when desired.
Another object is to provide gripping elements of strong, substantial and durable structure capable of withstanding all of the severe stresses incident to their uses and adapted to have their gripping portions ground or sharpened to give said gripping portions the requisite cutting edge.
Another object is to provide retaining means which will permit the requisite movement and operation of the gripping elements but which will retain these elements in asso ciated relation.
Other objects and advantages reside in cer tain novel features of the construction, ar-

Referring to the drawings, it will be seen my invention includes means for engaging or gripping the flue, comprising a spool-like structure consisting of a plurality of sections, segmental in cross section and prefer- Each section comprises a hub portion 10 having integral flanges 11 ateach end thereof. These flanges have their surfaces tapering to form peripheral cutting edges 12 adapted-to bite into the wall of the .flue as hereinafter more full described. The flanges are of substantial cross section adjacent the hub portion and have their inner surface tapering gradually and their outer surface tapering more abruptly, as shown. in the drawing. In this manner, the peripheral cutting edges 12 are so formed that they may be readily ground or sharpenedv to give and preserve the requisite edge and at the same time the flanges 11 are of such astrong and durable construction that they are capable of withstanding all of the severe stresses imposed upon them.
The retaining and guiding means preferably; comprises annular plates 13 provided with radial slots 14 and central apertures 15. These plates are arranged adjacent each of the ends of the gripping means, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, the radial slots being adapted to receive the pins 16,.s ecured at their inner ends to the'sections of the gripping means and providedat their outer ends with heads 16 to constrain the pins and the grippers against any except radial movement relative to the plates 13. The central aperture 15 is formed to accommodate the expanding means to be hereinafter more fully de'- scribed. i
The means for expanding the gripping elements comprises a tapered bar or shaft I 17 which is mounted for slidable movement between the-segmental sections orgripping elements of the gripping-means andthrough the apertures of the guide plates. The shaft is provided at its smaller end with an 'integral eye 18, to which power from any suitable source may be applied to effect longitudinal sliding movement of the tapered bar or shaft and a resultant outward radial movement of the gripping elements.
It is to be noted that the guide plates 13 serve not only to guide the gripping elements, as hereinbefore described, but also serve to maintainthese gripping elements in proper associated relation and to prevent any serious displacement of these elements relative to each other. If desirable, the guiding means may be omitted and a modified form of retaining means -may be employed, as shown in Fig. 2. This retaining means comprises a retaining band 19 which encircles the hub portion of the gripping elements and serves to prevent displacement of these elements with respect to each other.
The means for releasing or withdrawing the gripping elements from engagement with the flue comprises a conical boss in the form of sections 20, each of said sections being preferably integrally formed with a gripping element. "These sections are spaced from each other when the gripping elements are expanded into engagement with the flue and when these sections are compressed or moved into contact with each other, forming the frusto-conical boss, theyserve to withdraw the. gripping elements from engage ment with the "flue. .The means for compressing or moving the sections toward or into contact with each other consists of a release collar 21 slidably mounted on the shaft 17 and provided at the end adjacent the conical boss with a conical cavity 22,:1s shown in dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 2. The inclined walls of this conical cavity engage the inclined walls of the conical boss and serve to compress or move the sections toward each other or into'contact with each other. The release collar is providedwith a reduced extension 23 also slidably mounted I on the shaft and having a central bore therein of such diameter as will give the release I collar the required range of movement on the shaft 17., The reduced extension is provided with a plurality of radial threaded bores adapted to receive set screws 24 which may be moved to engage the shaft and thereby lock the release collar in the desired position on the shaft. l 7
In practice, the device is inserted in the flue to be withdrawn with the gripping elements in contracted position and preferably arranged adjacent the smaller end of the tapered boss or shaft. The power isthen applied from any suitable source through any suitable means to thejeye 18 of the tapered boss to move the same longitudinally through the gripping elements. This action serves to expand the gripping elements and expand them radiallyby virtue of the en gagement of the pins in the radial slots. of
the guide plates until thelcutting edges 12' of the gripping elements securely bite into the walls of the flue. By virtue of the particular form of the flanges constituting the gripping elements or jaws, thecutting edges bite into the flue only enough 'to securely engage with the same and do not serve to completely penetrate or pierce the structure of the flue. The power subsequently applied to the eye 18 serves to withdraw the flue. It is to be noted that the space interval between the gripping elements or jawsgive the same a wide range of action, and the relatively large extent of bearing surface provided between the gripping sections and the expanding shaft results in the proper disposition of the gripping sections and the transmission of adequate gripping and pulling action to said sections. 5. A flue extractor comprising gripping means for engaging the flue, guiding and retaining means for said gripping means consisting of annular plates having slots therein, and pins secured to said gripping means and slidable in said slots.
6. A flue extractor comprising gripping means for engaging the flue, guiding and retaining means adapted to constrain said gripping means to radial movement, consisting of annular plates having radial slots therein, and pins secured to said gripping means and radially slidable in said slots.
7. A flue extractor comprising gripping means consisting of a plurality of sections, each section including a hub portion, and gripping jaws formed on each end of said hub portion.

A flue'extractor comprising gripping means consisting of a plurality of sections, each section including a hub portion, and flanges constituting gripping jaws formed on each end of said hub portion, said flanges having their inner surface tapering gradually and their outer surface tapering abruptly to form peripheral cutting edges, substantially as described.
9. A flue extractor comprising gripping means consisting of a plurality of sections, each section including a hub portion and gripping jaws formed on each end of said hub portion, and means for expanding said sections to force the gripping jaws into engagement with the walls of the flue.

A flue extractor comprising gripping means for engaging the flue, guiding and re taining means for said gripping means, expanding means associated with said gripping means adapted to force said gripping means into gripping engagement with the walls of the flue, and means adapted'to positively withdraw said gripping means from engagement with'the walls of the flue;

A flue extractor comprising gripping means for engaging the flue, and means adapted to' positively withdraw said gripping means from engagement with the walls elements adapted to be expanded to engage the flue, expanding means associated with said gripping means adapted to force said gripping elements into engagement with said flue, a conical release boss formed of a plurality of sections, each of said sections being secured to a gripping element, and said sections being spaced from each other when the gripping elements are expanded into gripping engagement with the flue, and a release collar, having a conical cavity the walls of which are adapted to engage the spaced sections of said conical boss to force said sections together and thereby withdraw the gripping elements from engagement with the flue.

A flue extractor comprising gripping means including a plurality of gripping elements adapted to be expanded to engage the flue, expanding means associated with said gripping means adapted to force said gripping elements into engagement with said flue, a conical release boss formed of a plurality of sections each of said sections being secured to a gripping element, and
said sections being spaced from each other when the gripping elements are expanded into gripping engagement'with the flue, and means for forcing said sections together to withdraw the gripping elements from engagement with the flue.
15. A flue extractor comprising gripping means for engaging the flue, expanding means associated with said gripping means adapted to force said gripping means into gripping engagement with the walls-of the flue, and means adapted to positively withdraw said gripping means from engagement with the walls of the flue.
16. A flue extractor comprising gripping means consisting of a plurality of sections, each section including a hub portion and gripping jaws formed on each end of said hub portion, and means constraining said sections to substantially operative movement to engage the flue and to release the same, respectively.
