Description

1. A.l CAMPBELL. DOOR SPRING. AFPLICATlON FlLED MAY 24, 1919.

ATTORNEYS DOOR-SPRING.
i ,Barossa Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 24, 1919. Serial No. 299,492.
To all whom. At may cof/lawn lie it known that l. JoiiN A. CAMPBELL, a'. citizen of the United States, and a resi dent of Carbondale. in the county of .lacksoii and-State of Illinois, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Door- Springs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a door spring, and more especially to a door spring and check for vehicle bodies.
The object of my invention is to provide a door spring and check adapted to be concealed within the frame of the door and amb, which will automatically tend to keep the door in a normally closed position, and limit, to a predetermined degree, its outward swing when pushed open, and lock the door in its extreme open position.
A further object of my invention is to provide a' simple, inexpensive and efficient door Spring and check for automobile and other vehicle bodies, adapted to be concealed Within the frame thereof. Which will automatically tend to keep the doornormally closed, and, when opened, limit, to a predetermined degree,4 its outward swing, in which extreme open position the door may be held by means of a stay, the spring pressure increasing, as the door is opener, from a minimum in the closed position to a maximum in the extreme open position.
The invention comprises novel features of design. construction and arrangement and combination of parts, the embodiment and application of which, illustrated and descrilied in the drawings, specification and appended claims, 'is the form prefeired for the purposes of illustration; but it should be understood that the invention is not limited to such form and that the details -and application thereof may be varied Without departing from the objects and scope of the invention.
Reference is to be had to the drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views. and in Which,-
Figure 1 is a fragmentary view in side elevation representing a portion of an automobile body and illustrating a door thereof. the upholstery being broken avvay to sho1 the details of the door spring and check and the method of attaching the saine in place.
Fig. 2 is .an enlarged front view of a manually operable slide employed to lock thegdoor in its extreme open position.
'l*1g. is a side View in section of the slide shown in F 1g. 2 and a portion of the frame of the door to which it is attached.
- Fig. fl is a sectional plan View of the door and iamb illustrating thedoor spring and heck in the extreme open positionV of the oor.
Referring to the drawings, and proceed-` Patented J une 8', 1920.
6 and plate v8. Passing through a hole in plate 6 and in disk 7, and fixed to the latter by means of heading, is a draw bar 12 provided with an eyelet in the free end thereof for the attachment thereto of Vone end of a cable 13. Cable 13 extends through a hole 17 in the frame of door 10 and the lamb 14, and is secured under tension on the inner jamb surface by means of a nut 15 and set screiv 16. Concentrically with the hole 17, and in the frame of door 10 andV jamb 14, are recesses 19 and 18 respectively,
in which are inserted metal sleeves serving Vthrough slots 23; and `the upper edge of slide 22 is bent over to form a fiange 27 to which a rod 28 is secured by means of nutsA 29. The rod 28 extends upwardly through the top portion of the frame of door 10, the end `thereof projecting above and outside of the door, a knob 30 Vbeing fixed thereto for convenience of grasping the same with the fingers. A recess having a metal sleeve 31 fitted therein is provided, concentric with the hole 32 through which rod 28 projects, for the purpose of furnishing a seatV y Wardly compressing the spring V for the knob 30, Vand for protecting the upperl surfacerofrthe dooragainst Wear.
The spring 5,v adjusted under 'an init1al compression, tends automatically to keepthe door 10 closed. When the door is pushed open, the cable 13, beingfixed at one end to the jamblllexerts a pull upon draWfbar'12,
and, disk '7 being secured thereto, moves in- 5; also, "nut 21, on cable 13, simultaneous The force exerted by the spring 5 tending to close the door increases proportionately with the" amount of! compression of the spring which becomes greater as the door v1s opened. l The door can be swung Vopen until jnutv2l enters recess 20 and becomes seated' therein When the limit of motion is reached; f When Y the l door may be locked in this v,pulling upon knob 30, Whlch Y slide V22 upwardly and Vbring thefcircular Y the knob of the locking member of the device-is seated in sleeve 31,
n the circular opening o'f aperturel 24'in slide 22 yis in register with circular vrecess 20 in the'door frame. T his is the proper position for the slide when thefdoor is being opened.
Vhen the limit of motion is reached, Which"V Will be when nut 21 is seated in recess 20,
Will move openingof aperture 24: out of register' with L recess 20, and Well above said recess open-V 1 ing. as the groove 25 isbrought up in conf tact With the cable 13.y They door `may be unlocked by, pressing down on *V Y a obviously knob 30.
