Be it known that I, NATHANIEL C. STUDY,
acitizen of the United States, residing at Kalamazoo, Michigan, have invented certain. new and useful 'Improvements in Tamping- Machines, of which the following is a'speci.- ication. v
This invention relates to improvements'in tamping machines.:
My improvements are specially designed by me for embodiment in tie tamping machines, and -I have illustrated and described samekherein as'I have embodied in such a machine Certain features of myimprovements are,' however,'desirable 4for use in other relations. 1` c l The main objects of this invention are: 1 .First, to provide an improved electrically driven tamping machine which is very efficient and at the same time very light Ain weight, simple,feconomical' and durable in `Second, to provide animproved'tamping machine which is conveniently handled by the workman and with comparatively little effort, the same -being easily manipulated in the various relations and positions in which tampers-are required in railway construction and the like. i p

The handle 18 is provided with a handley 28 which isa-dapted to be 'mounted handle, said link-like handle member being on an ear 29 on the 'front side of the handle y 18, or on the link-like handle mem'berv 30' which is mounted on an ear 3l at .the lower end of the body. The link-like handle inember 8O isv adapted to be engaged by pin 32 by which the auxiliary handle 28 is mounted on the ear 29 so that it is supported out of the way of the operator.
By providing the handles as illustrated, the machine may be handled and adjusted -to meet the particular requirements of the work, or the convenience of the operator entailing the least effort on the part of the operator.` f
My improved tamping machine is eilicient, is comparatively light in weight, and is economical and durable in construction.
I have illustrated and described my improvements as I have embodied them in a structure which is very satisfactory. I havenot 'attempted to Aillustrate other embodimen-tsor adaptations, as Iv believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art lto which my invention relates to embody or `adapt the same, as may b e desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,'is-:

In a tamper, the combination of a casing-like body member having an ear on its bar reciprocatingly mounted'in saidbody upper side atits lower-end, a rigid mainhandle at the upper end of said body member'disposed in alinement therewith and -having an ear on its upper side and a grip4 at its outer end, a link-like handle member pivotally mounted on said ear on said body, an auxiliary handle provided with a grip and adapted to be mounted on said link-like handle member oron said 'ear on said main adapted. to be engaged by thepin by which said auxiliary handlefis mounted onl said ear, a reciprocating impact member within said body member, and a tamper bar reciprocatingly mounted in said body member' to receive the blows of said impact member.
