R. H. F|TZ GERALD. DISPENSING AND DISPLAYING CARTON.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 23, I919.
Patented June 1,1920.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BAY FITZ GERALD, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
DISPENSING AND DISPLAYING CARTON.
Application filed June 23,
clear, and exact descriptionof the invention,
such as .will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. i
This invention relates to improvements in dispensing and display cartons, and more particularly to such as are made of paper or card-board,one object of the invention being to so construct such a carton that it shall be capable of holding and dispensing articles of cylindrical form and operate effectually to hold back the greater bulk of the articles from the discharge or dispensing part and yet insure the feeding of such articles singly and without crowding.
A further object is to so construct a carton of the type specified that it may be readily and economically manufactured and quickly assembled.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a carton embody ing my improvements; Fig. 2 is a view partly in perspective and partly in section; Fig. 3
is a View of the blank from which the body of the carton is made; Fig. 4 is'a perspective view showing bottom member; and Fig. 5 is a View of the blank from which the bottom member ,is made. 1
In the embodiment of my invention shown in the drawings, the body of the carton 1 is. made rectangular in form, comprising front and back members 2, 3 and side members 4, 5 integral therewith. The side members 4-5 are provided at their upper ends with flaps 6, 6, and the front and back members 2, 3 are provided with flaps 7, 7 ,-said flaps being adapted to be folded inwardly and provide a top for the carton. The bottom of the carton may be similarly formed by means of flaps 8 and 9.
The front 2 of the carton is provided, near its bottom, with a discharge opening 10, a
shallow upstanding flange 11 being left be- Specification of Ietters Patent. Patented June 1 1920.
1919. Serial No. 306,195.
low said opening to form an abutment to prevent the accidental escape of the cylindrical articles to be dispensed. The side walls 4 and 5 may be notched, as at 12, at respective ends of the discharge opening 10 to facilitate the'grasping of the article to be dispensed.
Located within the lower portion of the carton, is an inclined bottom member 13 which is so constructed and placed in the carton as to provide 'a platform 14 inclining downwardly and forwardly from the rear member 3 of the carton to the front member 2 thereof, its front edge terminating below the upper edge of the flange 11. The bottom member 1.3 is provided with an upright member 15 which depends from the upper edge of the inclined platform 14 and lies against the back member 3 of the carton.
From the lower edge of the upright member 15, a base member 16 extends forwardly and rests upon the bottom of the carton. The base member 16 terminates rearwardly of the front of the carton and is made with an upturned flange 17 which serves as a brace (for the intermediate portion of the inclined platform 14. The upturned flange 17 is provided with a pluralityof upstanding tongues 18 (which may be located at the end portions of said flanges) and these tongues extend through notches 19 made in the side edge portions of the platform and project upwardly above the upper face of the latter at points rearwardly of'the front lower edge of said inclined platfo'rm.
The inclined platform of the bottom member will tend to cause the cylindrical articles within the carton to move forwardly, but the upstanding tongues will act as bafiies to hold back the major bulk of the articles, permitting only the front vertical tier of articles to be disposed in a vertical plane in front of that of said tongue. When an article is withdrawn through thedischarge opening 10, the next article in the front tier will drop into position and an article will move from the top of the next tier .to the top of the front tier of articles, and this will continue, asarticles are withdrawn through the discharge opening, until only two articles remain on the bottom inclined platform. These last two articles will be held back vby the tongues 18, and the merchant may; cause them to pass over said tongues by jarring o shaking the carton. v Various changes might be made in the details of construction of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof or limiting its'scope and hence I do not wish to restrict myself to the precise details herein set forth.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letmediate of the front and rear edges thereof.
3. The combination of the body portion' of a carton having a discharge opening in its lower portion, a bottom member located in the body of the carton and forming an inclined platform, and tongues projecting upwardly from said platform, said tongues spaced rearwardly from the discharge opening in the carton.
4. The combination of the body, portion of a carton having a discharge opening in its lower portion, a bottom member within said body portion and forming in a single piece a platform inclining in a direction toward said discharge opening and a part prowithin said body portion and comprising in a single piece, a platform inclining from the back to the front of the carton, a vertical member lying against the back member of the carton and a bottom portion provided with an upturned flange under the platform in a position rearwardly .of the front edge of the latter, said flange having upstanding tongues extending through and projecting upwardly beyond said platform.
6. The combination of the body portion of a carton having an elongated discharge opening in its front portion above the bottom of said front portion, thereby forming a flange below said discharge opening, an inclined platform extending from the rear member of the carton to the front portion thereof below the upper edge of said flange, and tongues projecting upwardly from said platform and spaced rearwardly from the front edge thereof.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
RAY H. FITZ GERALD.
