SWt'lGGER-STICK.
1,340,746. Specification of Letter P n .Patented May 18, 1920.
Application filed May 6, 1919. Serial No. 295,172.
1?) all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWIN L. YUNGK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hartford, county of Hartford, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Swagger-Stick, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact descrip tion. .7
This invention relates to toys and novel ties. More in particular the invention relates to what is known in the trade as a swagger stick novelty.
An object of the invention is to provide a novelty which will be unique, smart and attractive in appearance and one whichwill have an appealing influence upon holiday and festival occasions where celebration is engaged in by people of all classes.
manufacture, and which will be unlikely to get out of working order and which will add to the pleasure and attractiveness of the occasion on which novelties of this type are used.
With the above and other objects in view the invention has relation to a certain holiday novelty toy, as described herein, and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 shows the novelty in completed structure. 7
Fig. 2 shows a sectional view of the novelt 3 is a sectional view taken upon the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
-Fig. 4c is a view taken upon the line 7 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 illustrates a modified form of novelty showing simplified construction.
Referring more in particular to the drawings, the numeral. 2 designates a staff member constructed of appropriate material such as wood. This staff member will be of any suitable crosssectional shape desired such as round, square, hexagonal or other variations thereof. This staff may be in the shape or form of a walking-cane orof the swagger stick type used by military men.
Each end of the staff is turned or finished to a size smaller than the body thereof, and a metallic ferrule 3 and t fitted upon the ends thereof and formed flush with the surface of the staff. One end of the staff will be provided with an ornamental loop of ribbon'5 passed througlra slot in the ferrule and inserted between the staff and the fer T rule at the time said ferrule is pushed upon the staff during the process of manufacture.
The ferrule 4. is likewise provided with a slot and securely holds a'ribbon 7. The ribbon has free endswhich may be tied into a bow or ornamentation 8. The inner exposed loop 9 has attached thereto a bell cas ing 10 fitted with a bell clapper 11. This bell 10--11 may be of any suitable shape, size and design and have an audible ringing tone for the purpose of amusement and attractiveness.
The ribbons 5 and 7 will preferably be made of red white and blue material, to display patriotic intent of the owner of this novelty.
Figs. 3 and 4: show cross sectional views of the device and illustrate how the ribbon is passed through the ferrule and securely attached to the staff. The ribbon loop 5 may be of an appropriate length so that the novelty may be carried upon the wrist or arm of the owner.
The Fig. 5 shows a modified form of the swagger stick, with decorations omitted therefrom, thus providing a simplified form of novelty. This form of swagger stick bell novelty will be popular with a certain class of trade since it is simplified in design and appearance. A name plate 12 may be attached to the swagger stick and'engraved with the owners name or other legend.
This novelty provides holiday and festive makers with an appealing novelty which they may carry for display and exhibition of patriotism on' certain decorative and military events.
Having thus described my invention,
2. A novelty comprising: a staff with reduced ends, a ribbon applied to the reduced 10,
ends, a ferrule fitted upon the reduced end of the staff and ribbon assuming cylindrically flush fitted connection With the staff, and a bell attached to the ribbon.
EDWIN L. YUNGK.
