UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY WATSON, 0F NEWPORT, WALES.
DEVICE FOR SHARPENING OR HONING- ORDINARY OR SAFETY RAZORS, BLADES OR OTHER LIGHT CUTTING-TOOLS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 18 1920.
Application filed March 2, 1920. Serial No. 362,788.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY WATSON, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and residing at 212 Stow Hill, Newport, in the county of Monmouth, Wales, have invented a certain new and useful Device for Sharpening or Honing Ordinary or Safety Razors, Blades, or other Light Cutting-Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for sharpening or honing the blades of ordinary or safety razors, knives and other light cutting tools of the kind, comprising simply two or more bodies having curved surfaces acting as burnishers or Sharpeners, and means for holding said bodies in relation one to another so that'their peripheral surfaces contact and that the blade to be operated upon may be drawn between the bodies which will thereby be caused to roll over the sides of the blade substantially at the line wherethe sides meet and form the edge of the blade, the means for holding the bodies in relation one to another so that their peripheral surfaces contact, being capable of adjustment to vary the pressure between the bodies, and optionally comprising a spring device adapted to permit the bodies to move apart should excessive pressure he applied to the blade being operated upon.
. A device according to the invention comprises supports for t e bodies acting as burnishers or'sharpeners, having depressions for the accommodation of said bodies and elongated portions, a sleeve within which such elongated portions are arranged, surfaces on the said portion and on' the sleeve adapted to cooperate to vary the pressure between the bodies as the result of varying the distance of the ends of said portions from the adjacent end of the sleeve and means adapted to vary said distance.
The invention is illustrated by way of example intheaccompanying drawings, in
which:
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation, and
Fig. 2 is a section at right angles to the plane of section of Fig. 1 of one construction.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawlngs, 1 and l represent the spheres formed of hardened steel, '2 and 2* two members provided with depressions 3 and 3, and elongated portions secured by means of a pin 4 to the screw 5 and arranged within a sleeve 6, a nut 7 being provided to cooperate with the screw 5 to draw the tapered portions of the members 2 and 2 downwardly within the coned portion of the sleeve to increase the pressure between the spheres or to reduce this' pressure by rotation in an opposite sense.
In using the device illustrated, the blade to be operated upon is introduced into the gap between the supports for the spheres and while being pressed downwardly, so that the edge tends to force the spheres apart,
the blade and the device are moved in relation one to the other to cause the spheres to roll over the edge of the blade.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and inwhat manner the same is to be performed, Ideclare that what I claim is A device for sharpening the blades of razors, knives and other .light cutting tools of the kind specified, comprising bodies act- .ing as burnishers, supports having depres- SlOIlS for accommodating said bodies, elon-
