To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. DnMrsEY, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Corry, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Surface Trimming or Planing Machines, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to machines for trimming or planing the surfaces of various articles, and particularly such articles as meat blocks, and the object of the invention is to provide a portable machine of the class and for the purpose specified having rotary cutter operated by an electric motor which forms a part of the machine; a further object being to provide a machine of the class specified with means for adjusting or regulating the thickness of the cut to be made by the rotary cutter of the planer; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in a machine of the class and for the purpose specified which is simple in construction and operation and efficient in use.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a front view of the machine;

In Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, I have shown at 5 the framework of a machine which is approximately U-shaped in form in cross section, and comprises a top plate 6 and side plates 7 and 8. The side plates 7 and 8 are each provided adjacent to the corner portions thereof with outwardly directed ears 9, as clearly shown in Fig. 3 and centrally of the bottom edge of said plates are rectangular apertures 10 having outwardly directed bearing members 11 in which the shaft 12 is mounted and held in place by detachable bearing caps 13 mounted below and secured to the bearing members 11, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.

The sides 7 and 8 of the frame 5 are vided on the inner faces thereof and at the opposite sides of the bearing members 11 with vertical grooves 1 1, as clearly shown in Fig.3. Two adjustable blocks 15 and 16 are mounted in the opposite end portions of the frame and between the sides 7 and 8 thereof, and these blocks are each provided with tongues 17 which operate in the grooves 14: in the vertical adjustment of said blocks in the frame. Two bolts 18 are passed downwardly through the top 6 of the frame 5 centrally of the opposite end portions thereof and the heads 19 of these bolts are countersunk in and secured to the blocks 15 and 16, one of these connections being clearly illustrated in Fig. 2, and adjusting nuts 20 are mounted on the shanks of the bolts 18, whereby the position of the blocks 15 and 16 may be regulated, and these blocks are locked in any desired position of adjustment by lock nuts 21. The top faces of the blocks 15 and 16 are each provided with a mark 22, and the faces of the adjusting nuts are provided with marks 23 designated by numerals 1 to 6 inclusive in the construction shown, and these marks are adapted to cooperate with the marks 22 -to properly adjust the blocks 15 and 16 in the frame'5.
Secured to the shaft 12 between the bearingmembers 11 and the blocks 15 and 16 is a cylindrical cutter 24, having a plurality of cutter blades 25 secured in the periphery thereof and spirally arranged thereon as illustrated in Fig. 3. The blades 25, three of which are shown, are mounted in apertures 26, the side walls of which are beveled as shown at 27, and these blades are held in position by strips 28, the opposite edges of which are beveled to conform with the beveled faces 27 and screws 29 are passed through the strips 28 and into the body portion of the cylinder 24, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 4. The outer or cutting edges 30 of'the blades 25 protrude beyond the periphery of the cylinder24i as clearly shown in Fig. 1, and these blades operate in the manner of a plane to plane off or trim a surface over which the machine passes.
The shaft 12 extends at one side of the frame beyond one of the bearing members 11, and a sprocket 31 is secured thereto. An electric motor 32 is secured to the top 6 of the frame, and mounted on the shaft 33 pro- of the motor is a sprocket 34, and a chain 35 is passed around the sprockets 31 and 34, whereby the operation of the motor 32 will operate or rotate the cylinder 24:. The circuit wires 36 and 37 to the motor 32 are preferably connected with a suitable switch 38 whereby, in the operation of the machine, the motor may be conveniently stopped and started at the will of the op erator.
Movably mounted in the ears 9 connected with the opposite sides 7 and 8 of the frame are spring operated rollers 39, four of which are preferably employed. The rollers 39 are mounted in yoke-shaped supports 40, the shanks ll of which pass upwardly through the ears 9 and are movable vertically therein, and sheet metal springs 12 are mounted on the shanks ll above the head portions 43 of the yoke's i0, and the end portions of said springs are adapted to bear on the bottom faces of the ears 9. The springs 42 will be of such tension as to normally support the machine with the cutter cylinder 21, or the blades 25 thereof, slightly above the surface upon whichthe machine rests and by applying slight manual pressure downwardly on the machine, the rollers 39 will be raised againstthe tension of the springs a2 and the blades 25 brought in contact with the surface to be trimmed or planed. The extent of the downward movement of the machine will, of course, be limited by the adjustable blocks 15 and 16 which serve to control the extent of the cut.
It will be apparent that while I have shown certain details of construction for carrying my invention into effect that I am not necessarily limited to these details, as various changes therein and modifications thereof may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificlng its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A machine of the class described comprising a U-shaped frame at the opposite sides of which are bearings, a shaft mounted in said bearings, vertically adjustable blocks mounted in the opposite end portions of the frame, means on said blocks and in said frame for guiding said blocks, in their vertical movement, a cylinder mounted on said shaft between said blocks, a plurality of cutter blades mounted in the periphery of said cylinder, means for holding said blades in position, the opposite sides of the frame being provided with projecting ears in which a plurality of rollers are movably mounted, springs mounted in connection with said rollers and adapted to support the load of the machine, an electric motor mounted on the frame, and means for gearing said motor in connection with said cylinder. A machine of the class described comprising a U-shaped frame at the opposite sides of which are bearings, a shaft mounted in said bearings, vertically adjustable blocks mounted inthe opposite end portions of the V frame, means for indicating the adjustment of said blocks, a cyllnder mounted on said shaft between said blocks, a plurality of cutter blades in the periphery of said cylinder, a plurality of rollers tensionally supported in the corner portions of the frame, an electric motor, and means for gearing said motor in connection with said shaft.
