WASHING-MACHIN E.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 27, 1920.
Application filed June 30,` 1919. Serial No. 307,631.l
To all whom, t may concern I Be it known that I, REUBEN ERICH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of San Jose, in the county of Santa Clara and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a machine for washing clothes and other articles, and the object of my invention is to provide a device of the character indicated that will effectually utllize the cleansing properties of the washing liquid without material mechanical manipulation of the articles being washed, and that effectually forces the said' liquid throughv or between the articles without movement of the said articles with relation to each other. Other objects of my invention are to provide a device of the character indicated that will be simple in form, construction `and operation, cheap to manufacture, and that can be used for cleansing the finest lfabrics without injury thereto.
The figure is a vertical transverse section through the device ready for use.
In the drawing, 1 indicates a container having a cap 2 screwed thereon, the said cap having a bearing 3 formed therein. Placed in container l is a basket 4 having an axially positioned cylindrical inner wall 5 extending from the bottom to the top thereof and open at both ends with a central horizontal partition 6 secured therein as shown therebyforming a clothes compartment 7 ,an upper central compartment 8 and a lower central compartment 9. The compartments 9 and 8 are open to the interior of container 1 and the compartment 7 is closed ofi' from the interior of container 1 by a cap 10 and bottom 11 provided with perforations as 12 and 13 respectively. At 14 is shown a rod provided with a handle 15 and passing through bearing and secured to partition 6 by screw 16.
he basket 4 is of suitable size to reciprocate in container 1, and is provided with "a ring or washer 17 positioned in annular groove 18 formed substantially midway its length, said washer fitting closely inv the container land yet permitting the easy reciprocation of the basket therein. Basket 4 is also perforated throughout its lside walls as shown at 19 and also throughout its central partition 5 as shown at 20. Y
In operation the clothes 21 are placed loosely in annular compartment 7, cap 10 placed in position, the cleansing liquid placed in container 1 and the basket placed therein and cover 2 screwed into place thereon.
If power is nowvapplied to rod 14 the downward movement of basket 4 forces the said liquid through the perforations 19, 12 and 20 below washer 7 and partition 6 and through the clothes toward the center of the basket. As the basket descends and is filled with liquid the continuin entrance of liquid through the said per orations forces said liquid out il'lto the compartment 8 and into the container through the upper erforationsV -and the intervening clothes. f he upward movement of the basket reverses the direction of movement of the liquid, the two movements being clearly indicated by the smallarrows, the dotted lines at 22 indicating the position of the basket at the close of thedownward movement and the arrows on thisv portion of, the figure indicating the direction `of movement of the liquid as the basket moves upwardly.
The clothes are readily removed by removing the top 10 from the basket after the same has been taken out of container 1.
From the foregoing description it may be readily seen that the full effect of the cleansing properties of the liquid is utilized during both the upward and downward stroke of the basket, and is especially desirable in the cleansing' of gloves, handkerchiefs and .fine fabrics, the fine jets of liquid being forced directly through the fabric from both directions.
It is understood that changes in form, i
construction and operation may be made within the scope of the appended claim.
I claim:
A washing machine comprising a container having a removable end and a plunger operatively mounted to reciprocate therein, said plunger comprising an operating rod, a perforated basket mounted thereon provided with an annular gasket substantially midway its length and adapted to engage said container, said basket comprising inner and outer perforated walls, a perforated bottom and a perforated removable top, and an inner horizontal partition forming upper ancll1 lower compartments within said inner wa v Executed this 24th day ofy June, 1919.
