SIGNAL-POST.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 20, 1920..
Application filed July 23, 1919. Serial No. 312,657.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM OTooLE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Lorain, in the county of Lorain and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Signal-Post, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in signal posts, an object of the invention being to provide a signal post which, if struck by a vehicle, will bend so as not to injure the post or the vehicle, and which, when so engaged, will sound an alarm.
A further object is to provide a signal post which is of rubber or other suitable material which will not injure a vehicle when struck thereby, and which is capable of a bending movement with sufiicient elasticity toreturn the post to normal position when permitted.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, and combinations and ar rangements of parts, as will be more fullyhereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a view in vertical longitudinal section illustrating in full lines the normal position of the post and in dotted lines an angular position which the post may assume when struck by a vehicle; and
Fig. 2 is a view in transverse section through the post.
1 represents the upright member of the post which may be integral with the base 2 and carries at its upper end any approved form of sign or signal 3. The upright memher 1 and base 2 are preferably of rubber, and a strengthening ring 4 is secured to the base 2 by means of bolts 5, or other securing devices, so as to afford sufficient strength and stability to the base.
The upright member 1 is preferably hollow, as is also the base, and a bending point 6 is provided at the point of juncture between the upright member and the base, which may be made by an annular groove, as illustrated, or the structure may be otherwise formed to cause it to bend at this point.
Within the base 2 and upright member 1 at the bending point 6, a pocket 7 is provided receiving a bulb 8 of a horn 9 which projects into the base so that when the upright member is bent at an angle, the pocket 7 will be contracted to compress the bulb 8 to sound the horn.
The upright member "1 is preferably externally corrugated, as shown at 10, although, of course, it may be otherwise upright member on the base having elastic connection with the base, and an alarm device located at the point of connection between the upright member and the base and adapted to be sounded by the movement of the upright member relative to the base.
2. signal post, comprising a base, an upright member on the base having elastic connection with the base and adapted to bend at its point of juncture with the base, said base and upright member having a pocket therein at the bending point, a horn, and a bulb on the horn located in the pocket and adapted to be compressed by the bending action of the upright'member to sound the horn.
3. A signal post, comprising an upright member, and a base integral therewith, and
both of flexible elastic material, said uprightmember adapted to bend at its point of juncture with the base, and a horn within the signal post operated by the bending action I of the upright member.
4. A signal post, comprising a hollow upright member, a hollow base integral therewith, and a horn within the signal post having its operating bulb located at the point of juncture of the upright member and base, whereby the bending action of the upright member will sound the horn.
5. A signal post, comprising a hollow upright member, a hollow standard integral therewith, a horn within the post operated by-the bending action of the upright' member, said upright member having an annular groove therein at its point of juncture with -the base, whereby said upright member is adapted to bend at said grooved portion, a sign or signal on the upper end of the upright member, and longitudinal corrugations on the outside of the upright membeln- 6.
