Application filed July 2. 1319.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known th 1, Si citizen of ltussia, resi ling at Burton, of Monroe, and State of I ccr aln new usetul ln provein Coni'ertible Ladders and Benches, which the following a specification.
This
provide a structure which be used when in an e panded condition as a ladder, and which is capable of being contracted and disgosed horizontally so as to be used as a bench.
in further object is to provide a convert ib c ladder with ele nents which may be extended, forming legs or supports, whi e are hinged so as to NLi-ii' liiisrnn, a county rungs oi the ladder lorin divisions when the device is used. as a .e-it
or bench.
These a id other like objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclos "re, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the device in a folded position, when used as a bench.
Fig. 2 is a iront elevational view showing the parts extended ladder, and
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view drawn to an enlarged scale, the section being taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings in detail, a pair of rectangular bars 10 and 10 are engaged by hinges 11 with strips 12 and 12 acting as legs, the strips 12 being secured at the extreme end 01 the bars while the strips 12 engage said bars at a distance from the ends so that when folded they lie in the same plane.
7 The lower onus of thestrips 12 and 12 contain openings'l engageable with pins 14, extending down from the lower suriace of the bars 10 and 10 so as to hold the bars spaced parallel apart when the device is being used as a ladder, while the strips obviously may be turned outward, i; p anes at right angles to the bars, when the device is used as a bench.
l ivoted upon screws 15, upon the up' surface of the bar 10 are swinging pl. elemexts 16 containing recesses 17 their inner edges, near their outer i sanie being engageable with pins 18, set

if it be preferred the pins 17 and 19 may as formed with disks 25, slidably received in recesses 26 and thrust forward by coiled compression springs 27, held in the recesses by the plates .28, secured to the opposite sides of the bars by rivets 29, this construction being best shown in Fig.
From he foregoing it will be seen that an effective and practical device has been presented, which may be used either as a ladder or as a bench providing seats for a number of persons.
I claini 1. In a convertible ladder and bench, the combination with a pair of rectangular bars, means hinged to one of said bars engage-able with the opposite disposed bar whereby the bars are held in rigid spaced relation, and a plurality of sectional rung elements hingedly engaged between the inner edges of said bars, the sections of each rung being liingedly attached so as to be capable oi folding alternately above and below the surface of said bars when the device is used as a seat.
2. In a convertible ladder and bench, the combination with a pair 01'. rectangular bars,
strips liingedly engaged at the ends of said bars, said s rips having openings at their ire the free ends of said pivoted strips, and a plurality of sectional transverse bars hingedly engaged between the first mentioned bars, said transverse bars being hinged to extend alternately above and below the surfaces of the first mentioned bars when said bars are in a relatively closed position. 3. In a combined ladder and bench, the
combination with a pair of bars, support elements hingedly engaged in the endsot said bars, means for holding said support elements engaged with said bars when in a raised position, swinging clips pivotally engaged with one of said bars, said clips having slots in their opposite ends, pins set in the opposite bar engageable with said slots, means permitting the depression of said pins for allowing a displacement of said clips, other pins set in the bar on which said clips are pivoted. whereby said clips are held extended parallel to said bars, and a plurality of hingedly engaged sectional rungs extended between the inner edges of said ibars said run s bein adaoted to fold alternately in opposite directions.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.
STANLEY KASPER.
