IMPROVEMENT IN MITTENS.

Specification forining part of Letters Patent No. 133,689, dated December 3, 187:2.

To all whom imag/concern:

Be it known that I, EDWIN V. WHITAKER, of Gloversville, in the county of Fulton and' .State of New York, have invented an Improved Drive-Mitt, of which the following is a specification: v

The invention relates to a new article of manufacture .which is to be used in driving or riding horses or other animals; and which consists of a mtt having the four fingers covered in pairs, so that one of the reins will pass,

as usual, between said pairs, while two iin-Y gers, being in each pocket or envelope, will co-operate n keeping/one another warm; It

`also consists in the pattern which I preferably employ for cutting out said mitt.

In the drawing, Figure 1 is a front view of wrist and palm; Fig. 2 is a view of the back of Wrist and pockets;'Fig. 3 is a pattern of the back of wrist and tngers; Fig. 4 is a pattern of the front of wrist and back of thumb; Fig. 5 is a pattern of palm and front of iiny gers; Fig. 6 is a pattern of the inside of the thumb-piece; and Fig. 7 is a modification of *y drive-mitt.

ion to imitate a glove. The piece B is of peculiar conformation, with the back thumbpiece nearly at right angles to the wrist part. Both of these pieces are made preferably of cloth. The piece O is made of leather, as also the piece D, and both ot' the form shown in drawing, while the latter is sewed by a doublelap' seam. E represents a pattern for drivemitt made of leather, with wristot` any desired material, and with or without the dividing line on back of pockets to imitate glove. It will thus be perceived that the back and front may be made in two or more pieces withut departing from the principle of my invenion.

In regard tothe article itself', I do not confine myself to any pattern or mode of construction but desire to protect broadly the idea which I have conceived of separating the fingers into pairs which admit between them one of the reins.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let- 1. As a new article of manufacture, a drivemitt provided with two separate pockets, E F, each adapted to receive one pair of iin gers, as described.

2. A pattern for a drive-mitt consisting of the pieces a b c d, as shown and described.
