WILLIAM vv. HINMAN, oF E'LKHART, ILLINors.
IMPRQVEMENT IN END- GATES FOR wAcoNs.
Specicaton forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,646, dated December 3, 1872.
Be it known that 1, WM. W. HINMAN, of Elkhart, in the county of Logan and in the State of-Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagons; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of an end-gate for Wagons, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. v
Inorder to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, refer- I `igure l is a perspective view of a-wagonbox with the end-gate closed, and Fig. 2 is a the endgate open.4 n
A represents an ordinary wagon-box, and- B is the end-gate of the same.` 0n the outer side of the gate B are metal straps a a., secured and running up and down on the same. The lower ends of these straps form hooks b b, which are inserted in staples e e fastened to the rear edge of the bottom of the box, and together form the hinges upon which the'gate The hooks b b being open the gate can readily be lifted out of the staples when desired. lThe gate is fastened to the sides of the wagon-box, when closed, by means of clasphinges d d attached to the gate, and closing over staples t c' in the sides of the box, and held by means of pins ff passed through'said staples. At each end of the gate B on the inner side are inward-projecting win gs G C, the upper edges of which form arcsof a circle, and at the inner end of the same are formed hooks 7a h to catch on the pins fj' when inserted Ain the sides 'of the wagon-box, and thus hold the endgate B at the desired angle.
By this means the gate may beheld at any desired angle from the bottom of the box, and when so held at an angle the win gs C C prevent the coal, corn, or other substance in the Wagon-box from falling out between the gate and the end of the box.
Having thus fully described my' invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
rlhe end-gate B, provided with open hinges at its bottom and lap-hinges at its sides for connecting it detachably or adjustably to the wagon-body, when used with the wings C C, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I .l
have hereunto set my hand this 1st day of October, 1872.
