To all whom it may concern:
it known that 1 EDXARD ALLAN InoN else, a citizen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and lreland, and resident of 40 Mincing Lane, London, E. 0., England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fliers, of which the followin is specification, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the sazn This invention relates to pliers, particularly cutting pliers and while applicable to various forms of such is especially so to those used for cutting wire.
The chief object of the invention is to provide pliers which are capable of being used in one hand and by which two separate cutting actions in the same place can be obtained, thus enabling a thick wire or any other such article to be severed by cutting it partly through in the first cut and completing the severing in the second cut. \Vith pliers now made, if a'thick wire is to be cut it is generally necessary to take the tool in both hands because the handles or levers of the pliers when opened sufficiently wide to enable the wire to be taken into the cutting jaws are then too far apart to be grasped by one hand. It is often very advantageous to be able to use pliers with one hand only thus leaving the other hand free, and my improved tool provides this feature and enables for example, a soldier or other person to cut wire of say 6 to 4: Brown wire gage with one hand thus leaving the other hand free for other purposes.
The novel feature of my pliers is that while they may be used to effect a cut in the ordinary way by closing the handles or levers toward each other and thus closing the cutting edges, a wire too thick for one out in this way can be severed by making a partial out and then reopening and reclosing the handles effecting a still deeper out. In other words, by closing the handles once a cut is obtained and by opening and reclosing them the cut is deepened, or completed thus permitting a thick wire to be out say, half way through in the first movement and completely severed by the second cut.
Two examples of my invention are shown in the accompanying drawings in which like reference letters refer to substantially like parts.
Figures 1 and 2 show one form of the invention.
Figs. 3 and 4. illustrate another form.
In all these drawings the handle a is integral with the head Z) carrying blade 0 which coacts with the cutting blade (Z, pivotally mounted at c on the handle a.
In Figs. 1 and 2 the blade d is pivotally attached at 7 to handle 9 which is shown of hollow type, but could be of any other suitable forrn.
Within this handle a rocker h is pivoted at 2' and operating against a spring The inner or tail end of aw d is notched at it and the movements of the handle 9 in relation to the said jaw are contr lled by the engagement, or otherwise, of the rocker h in the said notch. To effect the first out, the rocker and the notch are disengaged, as shown in Fig. 1, and the handles are closed toward each other as indicated by the line and dot position. After the first out has been made the handle 9 is turned back, reopened, on pivot f to the position shown in full lines in Fig. 2this movement brings the tip of rocker it into engagement with the said notch so that upon reclosing the handle as shown by line and dot in Fig. 2 the jaw (Z is pressed further toward the jaw c and the second cut is made.
In Figs. 3 and 4, the handle a is pivoted at 0 to jaw (13 in much the same way as g is pivoted at f in Figs. 1 and 2.. Instead of usin a rocker of the shape shown in Figs. 1 and 2, I employ a tumbler p pivoted to the tail of jaw (Z. This tumbler is actuated by a leaf spring which in the first cut lies upon the tumbler as shown in Fig. 3 with the back edge d of the aw-tail in contact with the inside of the handle so that i on the handle is directly communicated to the jaw and the first cut is made. Upon reopening the handle it turns upon the pivot o and assumes a different alinement in relation to the jaw d. This opening causes the end of the spring 1 to slide forward on rocker p and the spring turns the rocker to the position shown in Fig. l where it will be seen that one end of the rocker takes a position between the tail of the jaw and the inside of the handle. This enables the handle, when reclosed, to further move jaw and the second cut is thus effected. Then the handle is again re-opened the end of the spring is drawn back over the tumbler and engages in notch 8, thereby returning the rocker to the position shown in Fig. 3, so that the tool is again ready for its initial tumbler entering between the sides of the handle.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. Pliers having a jaw with a cutting surface thereon; a second jaw movably connected therewith and having a cooperating cutting surface thereon and having a recess therein; and means for bringing said jaws together in a succession of complete operations for cutting and for separating them in a single operation the first of said cutting operations bringing said cutting surfaces toward each other without touching and'the second cutting operation bringing said cutting surfaces together so as to touch, saidmeans comprislng a handle and a rocker pivotally carried thereon for engagement with said recess in the second jaw.
2. Pliers having a pair of cutting-jaws having cooperating cutting surfaces thereon and means for bringing said jaws together in a succession of complete cutting operations and for separating them in a single operation, said means comprising a looselymounted handle for positively operating one of said jaws to bring said surfaces toward each other without touching and a movable part controlled by said handle for operating that jaw in alternation with the firstinentioned operationto bring said surfaces together so as to'touch.
