MOTOR-STARTING SWITCH.
Application filed February 7, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL H. BissicLL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful MotonStar-ting Switch, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to motor starting switches and has for its object a particularly simple and efficient arrangement of means for controlling the movement of the switch and for housing the switch; and the invention consists in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In describing this invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings. in which like characters designate correspondingparts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly broken away, of this switch and its housing.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a plan view, partly broken away.
Fig. 4c is a detail view of one end of the switch arm or yoke, and contiguous parts.
This invention comprises generally, a box open at one side, a cover for the open side of the box, a detachable casing mounted on the side of the box, a switch located in the casing including two sets of contacts and a movable switch member shiftable from neutral or off position to carry terminals thereof into engagement with the first set of contacts and in the opposite direction to carry terminals thereof into engagement with the second set of contacts, means for operating the switch member including a rock shaft extending transversely through the side of the box and through said casing, and means within the casing for controlling the movement of the movable switch member.

said perforation 9 being so arranged that the shackle will come into the path of the pivotal movement of the latch (3 and prevent imlat-ching thereof. The cover f is formed with a projecting dome-shaped portion 1 in which moves the movable switch member and its blades.

15 designates the movable switch member as a whole, said switch member including a yoke or bar 16 carrying two sets of terminals or blades 17 and 18 arranged to engage respectively with the contacts 13 and 1st. The yoke or bar 16 is formed with downturned ends 19. one of which is formed with a conical seat for receiving the conical end 20 of a pin or screw 21 extending through the side of the box 1 opposite that on which the casing 10 is located. The other downturned end 19 is formed with a slot 22 opening through the end of said arm, for receiving one end of the rock shaft 23 by means of which the movable switch member is operated. A key 24:. is passed transversely through the slotted end of the bar 16 and through the end of the shaft 23. Upon the removing of the key 24: the corresponding end of the member 16 can be raised so that the opposite arm 19 can be readily detached from the conical pointed pin 20.
The rock shaft 23 is journaled in a suitable bearing 25in one side of the casing, and extends transversely through said side and through the casing 10 and the side wall, thereof, and is provided with a handle lever 26 at its outer end, which is secured thereto in any suitable manner as by the key 26 The rock shaft 23 is normally positioned so that the movable switch member is in neutral or off aosition and a s rin 27 is associated therewith which is arranged so that when the switch member is shifted in one direction to carry the terminals 17 into engagement with the contacts 13, the spring is tensioned to shift the movable switch member in the reverse direction upon the release of the handle, to carry the terminals 18 into engagement with the contacts 1 1.
The means for controlling the operation of the switch member, operates to normally all) prevent movement of switch member from neutral position to carry the terminals 18 into engagement with the contacts 14 but to permit movement of the switch member from neutral position to carry the terminals 17 into engagement with the contacts 13, and to also permit movement of the switch member to carry the terminals 13 into engagement with the contacts 1% after said member has been shifted to carry the terminals 17 into engagement with the contacts 13.
This controlling means comprises a rock arm 28 mounted on the shaft 23 within the casing and having a laterally extending pin 29 at one end, and a. detent 30 mounted upon a shaft or arbor 31 and having a. hook shaped end arranged in the path of the pin 29 when the switch member in neutral. position to normally prevent movement of the rock shaft 23. rock arm 23 and switch member in one direction, that is. in such direction as to carry the terminals 18 from neutral position into engagement with the contacts 1 1. Said means also includes detent shifting means as a rock arm mounted on shaft 31 and arranged in the path of the pin 29 and movable thereby so that the pin 29 will ratchet past said rock arm 28, when the rock shaft 23 is operated to carry the terminals 17 into engagement with the contacts 13. The rock arm 32 has a shoulder 33 arranged. to engage the detent 30, so that when the rock arm 28 is moved in the opposite direction after it has ratcheted past the rock arm 32, the rock arm 32 by reason of said shoulder 33 will shift the detent out of the path of the pin 29 so that the movable switch member is shifted by the spring 27 to carry the terminals or blades 17 out of engagement with the contacts 13, and past neutral position to carry the terminals or blades 18 into engagement with the contacts 1a. Suitable returning springs 3 1, are connected to the detent and the shifting arm 32 respectively. The springs 34c, 35 are connected at corresponding ends to a pin or anchor common to both springs and the spring 35 is connected at its upper end to the hub of the arm 32 mounted on the shaft 31 and the spring 34 is similarly connected to the hub of the arm 30 also mounted on said shaft.
The handle lever 26 is provided with a bifurcated extension 27" which is arranged to come opposite a slot 36 in a lug 37 on the casing 10, when the switch member is in neutral position, this slotted lug being for the purpose of receiving the locking member as the shackle 38 of a padlock which shackle also extends between the bifurcations of the handle lever. A similar lug 39 is provided in such position that the switch member can be locked in. its on position. In operation, the handle normally stands in neutral position, and upon the movement thereof to the right, Fig. 1, the rock arm 28 moves upwardly carrying the pin 29 above the detent shifting arm 32 by moving the arm 32. upwardly about its axis 31 and tensioning the spring 35 until the end of the arm 28 slips off from the end of the arm 32 owing to the fact that the arc in which the end of the arm 32 moves is in the opposite direction from the arc in which the pin 29 on the arm 28 moves. The spring 35 then contracts and causes said arm 32 to snap into a position below the pin or shoulder 29. This movement of the handle tensions the spring 27 on the rock shaft 23 and also carries the terminals 17 into engagement with the contacts 13. Upon release of the handle, the spring 27 moves the rock shaft 23 and the arm 15 in the opposite direction and the pin 29 now bearing on the upper side of the shifting arm 32 pushes said arm downwardly and to the left, and the shifting arm owing to the fact that its shoulder 33 bears upon the upper edge of the detent 30 and forces the detent 30 out of the path of the pin 29 so that the switch arm can be moved by the spring 27 to carry the terminals 18 into engagement with the contacts 14:, the pin passing below and along a ratcheting surface 40 on the detent.
lVhen it desired to move the switch arm to neutral position it is operated by hand and the pin 29 ratchets along the surface 40 until the pin 29 ratchets into the position shown in Fig. 1. During the movement of the switch handle in a retrograde direction to open the switch and break the circuit, the pin 29 passes along the ratcheting surface a0 and cams the detent 30 to the left, Fig. 1 and tensions the spring 34 until said pin clears the point of the hook of the detent whereupon the spring retracts and again pulls the detent into its starting position as shown in Fig. 1.
This controlling mechanism forms the subject-matter of my patent, #1,116,552, November 10, 191 1, in which the controlling mechanism is covered in its broad aspect. This invention includes the same general features of the invention of said patent, but is directed to a different and in some respects more simple and compact arrangement than the mechanism of said patent.
This invention is particularly advantageous in that it provides a particularly simple and efficient arrangement of the motor starting switch and its controlling mechanism.
What I claim is:
1. A motor starting switch comprising two sets of contacts, a movable switch member, means for operating the movable member including a shaft, :1 rock arm connected to said shaft to be actuated thereby, and means for controlling the movement of the shaft including a detent normally coacting with the rock arm to prevent movement thereof in one direction, when the switch member is in neutral or off position, and a detent shifting arm extending into the path of movement of the rock arm in the opposite direction from neutral or off position, the shifting arm being arranged to permit the rock arm to ratchet past the same and having a shoulder for engaging the detent and forcing the same out of the path of the rock arm when the rock shaft is moved to carry said rock arm in the first direction, after the rock arm has ratcheted past the shifting arm, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. A motor starting switch comprising two sets of contacts, a movable switch member, means for operating the movable member of the switch including a shaft and a rock arm actuated by said shaft, and means for controlling the movement of the switch member including a detent normally coacting with the rock arm to prevent movement thereof in one direction from neutral or off position, a detent shifting arm extending into the path of movement of the rock arm in the opposite direction from neutral or off position, the shifting arm being arranged to permit the rock arm to ratchet past the same and having a shoulder for engaging the detent and forcing the same out of the path of the rock arm when the rock shaft is moved to carry said rock arm in the first direction after the rock arm has ratcheted past the shifting arm, the
shifting arm and the detent being mounted on a common pivot, and springs resisting pivotal movement thereof by the first rock arm, substantially as and. for the purpose described.
3. A motor starting switch comprising a box open at one side, a cover for the open side of the box, a switch located in the box and including two sets of contacts and a switch member movable about an axis located within the box, and a shaft extending through the side of the box in axial alinement with the switch member, the switch member being mounted on the shaft, the switch member being movable in one direction from neutral position to carry terminals thereof into engagement with one set of the contacts and in the oppositedirection to carry terminals thereof into engagement with another set of contacts, a handle mounted 011 the shaft on the outside of the box, means carried by the side of the box adjacent the shaft for controlling the movement of the shaft and the switch member to carry terminals thereof first into engagement with the one set of contacts before the shaft can move to carry terminals of the switch into engagement with the other set of contacts, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
