' WELL-CAPPING DEVICE.
will whomt may concern:
e it known that I, EARNEST H. MCCOY, residing at Schulter, in the county of Okmulgee and State of Oklahoma, have in- ,vented new and useful Improvements in Well-Capping Devices, of which the following is a specification. I v
This invention relates to oil and gas wells, and hasv for its object the provision of a device whereby the well may be capped in a thorough and substantial manner so that the flow of oil or gas therefrom may be readily controlled. 4 I
An important object is the provision of a device of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture,
highly efficient in use, durable in service,-
and a general improvement in the art.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more'fully described and claimed, and illus: trated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device. I
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view, Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1,
'Fig. 4 is an end view, and Fig. 5 is a cross sectional view on the line 5 5 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the letter A designates the upper end of awellcasing. In carrying out my invention I provide a member 10 formed as a bar of elongated strips of metal 11, each of which is formed with a substantially semicylindrical portion 12 intermediate its ends. These strips 11 are. placed upon opposite sides of the well casing with the curved portions 12 in embracing engagement therewith and the strips are secured together by a plurality of bolts 13.
Disposed upon the top of the well casing A isa head- 14 which of course communicates with the well casing and which has projecting from its. sides any suitable number of discharge pipes. closed and has formed thereon an upstanding projection 16 preferably provided with a slight central recess. This .head 14 is applied upon the upper end of the casing A and engages upon the top of the member 10.
In order that the head 14 may be securely 5 anchored .upon a well casing I provide a bar 17 which is disposed in spaced parallel re- The top of this head is Specification of Letters latent. t t 30 192a Application filed September 15, 1919. Serial No. 323,770.
having a threaded hole elitending therethrough'and engaged through this hole is a screw 22 having an operating head 23 and having its point 24 engaging within the recess in the extension 16.
At, the other ends of the members 10 and bar.17 Iprovide a clamping yoke 25' which is formedas an open loop having its lower portion: engaging within notches or recesses 26 in the lower edges of the strips 11 and having its upper end enlarged and provided with a threaded hole\ through which is threaded a screw- 27 having an operating head 28 and having itspoin't engaging the top edge of the bar 17.
' In the operationof the device it will be seen that after the member 10 is securely clamped upon the well casing and the head 14 is applied in position, the bar 17 is placed into firm engagement with the projection 16 on the head. The operator then rotates the screw 27 to exert leverage upon the bar 17 which will securely hold the head 14 in place. With the parts thus assembled, it
.will be seen that the distributing head will be heldsecurelyagainst any possible dis-. placement. -While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention it is of course to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form,
construction, and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit pf the invention or the scope of the subj oined claims.
Having thus described my, invention, 1 claim '1. A well capping device comprising a member adapted for clamping engagement upon thewell casing at a point spaced below the upper end thereof, a head for dis position upon the upper end of the casing and having its top wall clos'ed,an upwardly extending loop carried by one end of said member, a bar disposed abovesaidmember and said head and fulcrumed at one end within said loop, means. extending from the lower edge of' said bar and engaging said head, and means for applying pressure for urging the other end of said bar toward said member. a
2. A device of the character described comprising an elongated member adapted for clamping engagement upon a well casing, a head for disposition upon the upper end of the well casing, a bar disposed above said head and fulcrumed at one end with respect to said clamping member, a screw threaded through said bar and engaging said head, and means for urging the other end of said bar toward said member.
3. A device of the character described comprising an elongated member adapted for clamping engagement upon the well casing, a head for disposition upon the upper end of said casing and having a closed upper wall, a loop member extending. upwardly from and engaging one end of said member, a bar disposed above said head and having one end engaged withinsaid loop member, a screw threaded through said bar and engaging said head, and screw actuated means for urging the other 'end of said bar toward said member.
4. A device of the character described comprising a clamping member formed as a pair of elongated strips for conformingly engagin a well casing and bolted together, a head %or disposition upon the upper end of, the casing and having a closed top wall, a loop member extending upwardly from one end and engaging beneath the lower edge of said member, a bar disposed above said head and having one end engaged within such loop member, a screw threaded through said bar and engaging said head, a yoke straddlingly engaging the other ends of clamping member and said bar, and a screw threaded through the upper end of said yoke and engaging said bar whereby to force said bar toward said clamping member.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
