Be it known that I, JAMES Dore, a citizen of the United States, residing the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in BOX-N ailing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to boX nailingmachines, and it has for its object the pro vision of means in machines of this character for regulating the feed of the fastening devices to the driving means, whereby the number of fastening devices to be driven at each operation of the machine may be predetermined. I will describe a box nailing machine embodying my invention and then point out the novel features thereof in claim.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1. is a view partly in side elevation and partly in vertical section of a boX nailing machine embodying my invention. 2 is a detail view partly in side elevation and partly in vertical section of a portion of the machine shown in Fig. 1 and drawn to a larger scale. Fig. 3 is a top plan viewrof Fig. Q. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail view of a device embodying my invention for regulating the feed of the fastening devices to be driven. Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4 but showing the parts in a different position. Fig. 6 is a detail vertical sectional view taken on the line 6-6 of Fig. 8. Figs. 7 to 10 inclusive are detail views of the feed regulating means, showing it in diEerent combinations.

Referring more particularly to Fig. l, A designates a suitable frame upon which the several parts comprised in machines of this class are arranged. B designates a table for supporting a box C, or other work, into which the fastening devices, such as nails are to be driven. lI`he table Bis adjustable in a vertical direction, by means of a screw b in a manner well understood in the art, to provide for different sizes of boxes or diiferent thicknesses of work. D designates a chuck of any well known construction of which there may be any desired number, and suitably supported on the frame A in any well understood manner. The nail or other fastening device is conducted to the chuck through the tube d and is driven into the boX or other work by means of a plunger d1 comprised in the chuck D. The plungers Z1 of all the chucks D, are engaged by a crosshead E to cause them to simultaneously drive the fastening devices into the work.`
This is well understood in this art.
F designates a pan or receptacle for re ceiving the fastening devices. It is mounted to be oscillated in orderk to varrange the fastening devices or nails in slots (see Fig. 2) from which they feed by gravity `into inclin'ed grooves f. The grooves ffeed the nails to regulating means, which in turn de'- liver the nails to a chute f2 with which the tubes d are connected.
The regulating means for feeding the nails or other fastening devices to the chucksI) comprises pairs of superimposed disks G, G1. One such pair of disks is provided for each chute f2, and they are so arranged as to have their peripherie-s close to the groove f with which they coperate.
Each pair of disks G, G1l are mounted on a gear g, which is suitably journaled in a plate g1, carried by the frame A. The disks G, G1 rotate with the gear g and this is accomplished by means of conical. studs g2 formed on the gear g, which enter openings in thelower face of the disk G1. A weight g4 is provided to .hold the disks G G1 in engagement with their gear g. The several gears g are driven from a worm g3 suitably mounted in the frame A. The worm g3 is driven from a driving mechanism, it being provided with a gear 705.
One of the disks G, G1 is provided with a series of peripheral notches g5, here shown as being in the lower disk g1, the purpose of which is to receive nails from its groove f and deliver them successively to its associated chuck. When a nail is in one `of the notches g5, the disk G1 will carry it from the groove f over the chute f2 at which point it leaves the notch and drops into the chute f2, which conducts it to the chuck D. This is apparent from Figs. 4 and 5. The other disk, here shown as being the disk G is also provided with a series of peripheral notches g, of different peripheral lengths. The purpose of these notches g6 is, that by a rela tive adjustment between the two disks G, G1., one, two, three or four of the notches g5 can be opened or covered. For example in Figs. 4 and 5, only one notch gr5 is open while the other three are closed. In Fig. 7, two successive notches are open and two successive `tive adjustment of the disks G,
notches g5 are closed. In Fig. 8, two alternate notches g5 are open and two alternate notches g5 are closed. In Fig. 9 three notches g5 are open, While in Fig. 10 all four notches g5 are open. With four peripheral notches g5, any of the following combinations inay ybe had-four nails fed in succession three nails fed in succession and one blank or miss, two nails fed in succession and two blanks or misses, two nails fed alternately and two 'alternate blanks or misses, and one nail fed, and three blanks or misses. Obviously the two disks could be adjusted relatively, so that no nails will be fed. j
Any desired means may be employed for holding the two disks in relative adjustment. `As here shown, I employ a screw and nut g8, which extends through a radial slot g inthe disk G to enter an opening 'g9 in the disk G1.l The nut bears upon the edges of the radial slot so that after the relay G1, they are held in their adjusted positions.
It will be observed that lthe wall g2@ of each peripheral notch g is beveled as is the succeeding marginal surface of the disk G. The purpose of this is, in the event of a nail head dropping onto the disk G1 in one of the peripheral notches g while still in its groove f, the 'bevel g2O will again raise the nail in its groove f onto the disk G until a notch g5 registers with the groove f at which time the nail will be conducted from its groove f to its associated chuck D. This operation is illustrated in Fig. 6.
It Will be observed that by my invention any combination of nails may be obtained in anailing operation. For example the sets of disks G, G1 maybe adjusted so that upon one operation of the machine a certain number of nails will be driven, and upon the next operation of the machine, either the same or a greater or less number can be driven.
The driving mechanism for operating the various movable parts of machines of this type is well understood in the art. Briefly it comprises a drive shaft K, from which through a train of gears and levers the pan F, is continuously oscillated. An idler shaft is also driven from the driveJ shaft K, and upon the operation of a treadle (not shown) a clutch is operated to connect the idler shaft c` with a shaft V(not shown) carrying a crank icl, which is. connected with the cross-head E, and a gear 7a2, which drives a shaft 163, the upper end of which is provided with the gear 7c, which neshes with a gear 765 carried by the worm shaft g3.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
In a boX nailing machine in combination, means for driving the fastening` devices;
means for feeding the fastening devices to the driving means; means for regulating the feed of the fastening devices comprising a pair of superimposed disks, one of which is provided with peripheral notches which receive the fastening devices and the other of which is also provided with notches but of different peripheral lengths, and said disks being relatively adjustable whereby one or more of the receiving notches may be covered; and a bevel on one of the marginal walls of each of the elongated peripheral notches. j y j y,
