To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES M. YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dickson City, in the county of Lacliawanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Universal Supports for Eyeglasses, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a device for holding eye-glasses or spectacles and sup porting them from the vizor of a cap or the brim of a hat.

The main object of my invention is to provide a support which will permit the eye-glasses to be brought into position in front of the eyes or to be instantly swung up against the vizor or brim. A further object is to provide a support which will clamp and hold any pair of spectacles or eye-glasses and which may be adjusted to different shapes and sizes of vizors so that it may be universal in use.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of my spectacle support showing the eye-glasses in operative position, the support being clamped to the vizor of a cap, the cap being turned back slightly to show the under side of the vizor; Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the same showing the clamping arm holding the glasses swung up into inoperative position; Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the support on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; and Figs. 4, 5 and 6 are enlarged detail views of the clamp for holding the bridge piece of the glasses.

The rigid frame comprises a transverse member 2 and an arched or bowed member 3 extending forwardly therefrom. The frame is provided with spring clips t at the center of the member 3 and 5 at the ends of the member 2, the latter being tubu lar or provided with a bore for a length sufficient to permit the insertion of the supporting ends of the clips 5 so that they may he slid in or out to adjust the frame to different sized vizors, indentations 6 adjacent the ends of the frame member being provided to frictionally engage the stems of the clips.

The swinging supporting arm 8 is hinged at its rear end to a short integral arm 9 projecting forwardly from the frame member 2, and at its free end is provided with a clamp for the bridge-piece 10 of the eyeglasses. The clamp shown in detail in Figs. 4:, 5 and 6, consists of a swinging portion 12 hinged to the end of the arm 8 the parts being suitably grooved to form an elongated opening 14. to receive the bridge-piece. The clamp is securely held in closed posi tion by means of a screw 15, and is braced against lateral movement by a dowel pin 16 :arried by the swinging member 12 which enters an aperture 17 in the arm.

When it is desired to us the glasses, the arm 8 is swung down into substantially vertical position, thereby bringing the lenses directly in front of the line of vision, as indicated, in Fig. 1, the bridge-piece spanning the nose but without directly contacting with it. WVhen the glasses ar not required the arm 8 is swung forwardly until the arm is engaged by the spring clips 18 depending from the center of the bowed member 3.

My spectacle or eye-glasses support is especially adaptedfor use by autoists to hold their smoked or colored glasses which are used to shield the eyes from glare during the daytime and from the lights of approaching vehicles at night. It is frequently desired to remove the glasses from in front of the eyes either when passing through a town or city or when under overshadowing trees and the change may be made instantly with a sujfiportin device such as I have disclosed herein. The ad vantages which are peculiar to my device will. be appreciated by those familiar with other devices intended for this purpose. The adjustable side clips 5, enabl the frame to be adjusted to vizors of various sizes and shapes without injury thereto. The rigid frame members 2, 3 not only form an adequate support for the swinging arm 8 and the glasses, but also constitute a reinforcement for the vizor and prevent it from becoming misshaped, which is quite important sinc the correct position of the glasses is dependent thereon. .The clamping deviceat the end of the arm 8 is adapted to receive the bridge-piece of any glasses or spectacles and consequently adapts my support to universal use. I have described in detail the particular construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings but it is evident that various changes and modifications may 'be made without in any manner departing from myinventiom v,

I claim:

l. A support for eye-glasses, comprising a frame having a transvers member and a forwardly extending arched 01' bowed member, clips secured to the ends of the transverse member and to the intermediate part of 'the'bowed member adapted to clamp over the edge of a cap vizor or hat-brim, and a swinging arm hinged to the center of the transverse member and provided at its fre end with a clamping device to detachably secure the bridge-piece of a pair of eye-glasses.

2. An eye-glass support as defined in claim'l and in which the clips at the ends of the transverse member are telcsco ically secured thereto, and the clamping device for the bridge-piece comprises a hinged portion.
