SCREW-BOLT PLIERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 9, 1920.
Application filed July 25, 1919. Serial No. 313,305.
1 '0 all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, SPnNcnn ALLAN Donsnr, ot the city of St. Catharines, in the county of Lincoln, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Screw-Bolt Pliers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in screw bolt pliers and the object of the in vention is to devise means in a pair of pliers forengaging the cross groove of the screw bolt thereby preventing the slipping of the pliers when unscrewing the bolt and it consists essentially of the following arrangement and construction of parts as hereinafter more particularly explained.
Figure 1, isa perspective view of the upper portion of a pair of pliers showing my device connected therewith.
Fig. ,2, is a side elevation 01* the jaw portion of a pair of pliers showing the upper portion of the jaw members in section.
In the drawings like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the various figures.
1 indicates the major portion of a pair of pliers. 2 and 3 are the jaws of the pliers provided in their inner faces with recesses 4 and 6 is a member located between the jaws 2 and 3 provided with a screw driver edge 7 at its upper end,'a cross slot 8 inter mediate of its length and a cross orifice 9 in proximity to its lower end. 10 and 11 are a pair of links pivotedly connected together and to a. member 6 by a cross pin 12 within the slot 8. The opposite end of the links are pivoted within recesses and 5 by pins 18 and 1 1. 15 and 16 are orifices formed in the jaws 2 and 3 at their lower end. The inner ends of the orifices 15 and 16 are flared upward at 17 and 18. V 19 is a stiff wire which extends at its end freely into the orifices 15 and 16 and through the orifice 9 of the member 6 intermediate of its length. 20
and 21 are compression springs extending around the wire 19 between the jaws 2 and'3 and each side of the member G; N hen the jaws 2 and 3 of the wrench are opened, the links 10 and 11 arespread toward horizontal position and thereby draw the upper end 7 of the member 6 inward. The wire 19 tends to assume the straight line, the lower end of the member 5 being held in position by the springs 20 and 21. When the jaw members 2 and 3 are closed so as to grip 1. The combination with a pair of plier jaws, adapted to grip the head of a screw belt, of a screw driver member supported between the jaw members and adapted to engage the cross groove of the bolt, to prevent slipping of the jaws inoperation.
2. The combination with a pair of plier jaws, adapted to grip a screw bolt head, of a screw driver member supported between the jaws, means operated by the closing of the jaws for carrying the screw driver member outward into engagement with the groove of the head and by opening the jaws for carrying the screw driver member inward out of engagement with the groove of the head, the said member when engaged with the groove serving to prevent slipping of the jaws relative to the bolt head.
3. The combination with a pair of plier.
jaws, of a screw driver member located between the jaws, links pivotedly connected at thelr inner ends to the screw driver member and at their outer ends to the plier jaws, and
surrounding the wire between the plier jaws and each. side of" the screw driver member.
5. The combination with a pair of plier jaws, of a work-engaging member supported by saidjaws and movable therewith into engagement with the work, the said member serving to prevent slipping of the jaws relative to the work during operation of the tool.
