l :WILLIAM It. BEATTY, or HAMMOND, INDIANA..
FLOOR-CRANE.
. Hammond, in the county of Lake and State of Indiana, have Invented certain new and` useful Improvements in Floor-Cranes, of which the following Isra specificatlon, reterence helnghad therein to the accompany.
ing drawings.
"This inventionrelates to floor cranes, and more particularly to ay compact and easily handled crane thatv can be readily moved to any part of a shop or works by one Y person.
The Object vor the invention' is ai@ 1mprovement inv the construction ofi aloor crane that is readily-movable Varound a tals tion ofthe-arrows.` l (5 building or shop, and which involves a very uniquehoisting devicethat does not .require-.any ratchets or locks for holdmg'said;
l device in a givenfposition. ,Y
Another object of the Invention the construction of a crane which, by reason of its efficient compactness and simplicity of construction, will offer the least friction andwhich can be easily operated by .anind ividu al, not only lto manipulate the hoist but also for transferring the crane complete from-one place to anotherplace ina.
works or planter shop.
v With these and other objects inview, my invention comprises certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts as will -be hereinafter speciiicallydescribed, illustrated in Vthe accompanying drawings, and more particularlypointed out in the appended claims.
, In the drawings,
Y Figure lis a view 1n side elevation ofmy r4o flooncrane. v Fig. Q'is a frontview of'my Hoor crane. Fig. 3 is a horizontalsectionalview .taken on line 3 3, Fig. 1,:looking inthe direc- .',Figfis afragmentary sectional viewoi the upper. part of the floor crane. i
. Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on line 5-5` Il,r looking in the direction of the arrow. y f y Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one ofthe sectionsofthe'worm-casing'.V v v Fig'.- 7 isa sectional View takenron line 7-'-7.Fi,q. 1. UnReierring` to the drawings by numerals,
1 designates the platform orV basestructure R. Bamm.'
of the craneand 2 the"standardstructure attachedto the'base or platform.; Theplatform `is substantially ythe shape of large U, and in cross section the' body is an inverted U or Ushaped, as clearly shown at the ends. 3, Fig. 2.. The vends Bare each provided with downwardly-extending lipsl 4,' through which' lips l Vextend axles 5. Jour'n'aled-upon the axles 5,V and within the f ends 3; arey rollers or wheels 6. Integrali with the rear `centralA portion 'of theplatform ori base-structure 1 is a depending-lip 7 through which` extends axle 8,-an'dljournaled on the axle, Vnear 'itsends, are roll-V ers. or wheelsv 9. y Attached to thisl axle` 8. is a" handle 1 for pulling rconveyinpthe` crane at the will'of the operator." 'The platform or basestructure is provided at opp'cf ,siteV sides with integral, depending supports 1l ywhich relieve some of thestraink of' the load-off the rollers or wheels, by reasonvof the dependingv` supports 11 engaging at their lower ends the floonbut notV interfering with the hauling or pulling, through the medium of the handle r10,' 'of the crane voverthe LHoor of the Shop Ywhen desired.` Y a Y lThe standardlstructure of crane' com-V.
'atfits rear end. The standardlstructure is provided Vwith a tubular-like 'orl main'` portion lll/'thatis'curved Vthrou, eghout its length,
, and with a webelike, auxiliary or rear'porf tion 15. The mainportion 145 and the' auxill iary rearportion-l are connected by a v ing` portion 16. Formed upon theupper y end'f of the rear portionlv is arfbearing 17, andformed upon the upperportion of `the forwardly-.extending endy of the main portion' 14; is a bearing 18."` lntegralwiththe torwardly-extendingl or outery end of' fthe main portion 14h/on which thebearinglS .is formed, are right-angularly'` dirsped Y flanges Vor earsj19 for supporting the, see
- tional worm-casing 20.
The sectional wormfc'asing 2O comprises (Figi.v 6) comprising a bodyportio'n V21,
vupper, outwardly-extending apertured ear kstituting an ear. is formed upon the section,
ltwo 'similarly-constructed sections, leach` and eachy ear Q4 isplar'redwagainstjthe sixni-v p. .l
l5 with the gear 28 (Fig. 4).
Suitable fastening means such as bolts 26 are extended through these last-mentioned ears for holding the outer portions of the sections together.' Extending through the` bodies-21 of the sections, constituting the worm-casing, is a shaft 27, and fixedly secured to this shaft, within the worm-casing, is-a gear 2S. Journaled in the bearings 17 and 18 is a dri-ving shaft 29, whichf driving shaft:V extends partly through the worm-casing, and has the worm 30 formed thereon within thecasing, which worni30 meshes On the outer end of the driving shaft 29 is positioned a pulley or gear wheel 31 upon which is positioned a chain 32, so that the operator can pull on the chain and rotate or drive shaft 29 for` operating the. worm 30 Vand gear 28. YUpon the gear 28V being rotated, similar movement will be imparted to the shaft 27, andthe pulleys or gear wheels 33, fixedly secured to lshaft `27 will be rotated, thereby causing the chain 34 tobe raised or lowered,
depending upon the direction of rotation of` shaft 29, resulting in the manipulationof the plate or'fblock 35 carryingthehoisting hook 3,6.-V
It is to be understood that the operator graspsthe 'chain 32 and pullsV on the same to rotate thewheel or gear 31, thus imparting a` rotary movement tothe wheels or gears 33 resulting in the raisingorlowen ing of the hook 36 that may be attached to the load to be raised or lowered Upon' the operator releasing chain 32,.the hoist will beinstantly stopped. in its travel and remain in the,adjusted-position without any additional locking means otherthan the worm vand gear structure of the crane. My improved crane offersthe least amount of friction; is simple and compact in construction, and owing to its eiiiciency and si1n plicity, it canloe manufactured. at a mini- .nun1 cost.
I wish .it tobe understood that` I reserve the right to malrecertain minor alterations and changessasfshallA appear-to lone skilled in the art to which this invention relates,
Vwhich changes or .alterations fairlyv fall within the s 'cope Vof the appended claims.
,It `1s a obvious, of course, ,Y that my, crane may be operated by motor poweror in any Y other manner.
