To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JULIEN STRANDERS, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of the borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display Devices, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to improvements in display devices, particularly for advertising purposes, and intended to constitute an artistic background, frame, and self-sustaining support for the article to be advertised or displayed.

An object of the invention is to provide such a device which when not in use, will assume a flat shape, facilitating shipping and handling thereof in large numbers, and when erected for display purposes, will form a substantial support for the article to be displayed, and at the same time a framing portion which will assume the shape of a canopy above the article to be displayed. Another object is to provide such a device in which all of the printing, lithographing and advertising matter will be on one side of a single piece of material, thereby greatly facilitating and economizing the production thereof.

With these and other objects in view my invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, and will be hereinafter more fully described with reference thereto, and finally pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings, my invention comprises an apertured member 10, provlded with a straight lower edge, the lower portion being provided below the aperture with adjacent rectangular shaped portions 11 and 12, which have the general shape of the faces of a truncated pyramid. The upper the edges cut to correspond, or if desired the edges may be plain as indicated in Figs. 2 and 3. Secured to the members 10 at the back, there is provided a member 13, comprising two rectangular portions 14 and 15, similar in shape to the portions 11 and 12, and flaps 16 and 17 pasted to the member 10 at the sides of portions 10 and 11. The lines of division between the members 10 and 11 and the wreath portion, and the members 14 and 15 and the flaps 16 and 17, are scored, so that the said members may be formed into a truncated pyramid structure as clearly indicated in the drawings. The upper corners of the said members are provided with upwardly extending portions which form retaining lugs 18 against which the article displayed (shown in dotted lines) abuts, and serves to hold the said members in open position.

The opening of the said member, it will be seen, throws the upper wreath shaped portion slightly forwardly in the shape of a canopy over the article, thereby effectively and artistically framing the same. The curving of the canopy extends over all portions of the same, as clearly indicated in the drawings. The support formed by the members 11, 12, 14 and 15 is substantial and rigid, and provides suitable space for advertising matter descriptive of the article. The flexing of the portion 10 opens the base and the spring tension in display position is such that upon assuming a flat position the base is collapsed.

If desired the supporting portion may comprise a greater number of sections, and for a rectangular or triangular shaped article may be rounded and provided with suitably spaced retaining lugs.

I have illustrated and described a preferred and satisfactory form of my invention, but it is obvious that changes may be made therein within the spirit and scope thereof, as defined in the appended claims.

I claim:

1. A device of the character described comprising a base having more than two panels hingedly connected to each other to form a many sided structure, and all of said panels being adapted to support an article directly upon their upper edges whereby the weight of the article is directly and equally distributed upon said panels, and each of said panels being provided with means to coact with the article whereby the panels are positively held against relative movement and collapse of the base structure thereby prevented.

2. A device of the character described, comprising a collapsible base having a plurality of hingedly connected panels adapted to be expanded and positioned upon a suitable support in spaced relation to each other,

said base panels adapted to support an article to be displayed upon their upper edges, a display panel permanently connected at its ends to opposite sides of said base at the juncture of adjacent panels and extending over the base and the article displayed thereon, and upwardly projecting lugs formed upon the upper edges of the panels adapted to coact with the article whereby the base panels are positively held against relative movement, and maintained in separated relation and the display panel is maintained in a forwardly projected position relative to the expanded base panels.
