UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL o. HORTON, oF sT. PAUL, MINNESOTA, AssIGNoB. or ONE-HALF To WILLIAM FLEMING, vor sT. PAUL, MINNESOTA.
TRUNK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 2, 1920.
Appiieation sied Juiy so, 1917. serial No. 183,387.
ful Improvement in Trunks, of 'which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to improvements in trunks, the primary object'bcing to provide a trunk containing 'a tier of drawers for holding articles, said drawers being held within an outer 'casing'provided with means, whereby the same can be opened on top and at one side for convenience in gaining access to the drawers.
A further object is to provide improved means for holding the drawers securely in closed position.
Further objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description.
In the laccompanying drawing forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective of my invention the top being in open condition and the front removed; Fig. 2 is a central vertical cross section; Fig. 3 is an elevation of a detail, part of the structure being in cross section, and Fig. 4L is a perspective of the front side when removed from the casing.
In the drawing, let A indicate a casing which resembles in shape a parallelepiped, 2 and 3 representing the ends, 1 the back, 5 the Hoor, 6 the folding slidable cover and 7 the detachable front. This casing is adapted to hold a tier of drawers, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13 of any suitable number desired, said drawers being slidably supported upon suitable cleats 14 secured to the ends and disposed so that the drawers will slide horizontally through the open front side of the structure. There is also a receptacle or tray 8 corresponding in size and shape with one of the drawers described, but immovable in the casing, it being closed on top by the cover 6.
The top 6 is composed of two membersl and 16, which are hinged together at 17, said members being formed on their ends with suitable tongues 18, which slide in horizontal grooves 19 in the ends 2 and 3, so `that when the cover is slid backwardly into open position, the greater portion of the top which is composed of the section 16 will drop at the back of the casing, out of the way, leaving the companion section 15 held in the groove 19. Thus the 'top when moved into open position is held attached to the ends 2 and 3,
so that the top is not likely to be lost, and
is supported out of the way, leaving the top of the casing open and the top receptacle accessible for placing `articles therein or removing them therefrom.
Uien the top of the casing is closed, the cover closes the top receptacle.
WVh'en the drawers are closed, the front of the casing can be closed by the removable ront 7, which also holds the drawers in closed position and from sliding movement. This front is in the form of a plate having a metallic protecting band 20 secured around its side edges by nails 21 or other suitable means, said band being formed with a pair of hooks 22, which are adapted to engage in loop elements 23 attached to the front edge of the bottom or floor 5, whereby the front is detachably secured to the Hoor by a separable hinge connection, which permits the front to swing outwardly and downwardly and to be detached from or attached to the floor. When attached and swung upwardly into closed position, the front is fastened to the forward section- 15 of the cover by means of the hinged hasp 24s, which is fastened to the band 20 and front 7 and provided with a lock 25, said lock being adapted to engage in the socket 26 formed in the section 15 and being controlled by the use of a key 27. Thus when the casing or cabinet is closed, the front and top are interlocked by a single locking element. The back edge of the section 16 of the top is provided with a stop 28, which limits the forward closing movement of the top. Suitable protecting devices are attached to the corners of the casing to protect the edges and corners from hard use, the band 2O being formed with projecting knobs 29 and the lower corners and edges of the casing being provided with a metal band 30 secured thereto by nails 31 or other suitlable means and formed with projecting knobs 32. The top corners of the ends 2 and 3 are also provided with metal bands 33, also having projecting knobs 34, said bands being secured to the ends by nails 35 or other suitable means. The top faces 36 of the bands 33 project inwardly over the end edges of the top and the grooved top edges of the ends to assist in guiding the members 15 and 16 in their sliding movement, to protect the joints from dust and dirt and -to reinforce the strength of the material above the groove 19.
In accordance with the patent statutes, I have -described the principles of operation of my invention, together with the apparatus which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof, but I desire to have it understood that the construction shown is only illustrative, and that the invention can be carried out by other ineans and applied to uses other than those above set forth within the scope of the following claim.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is z- The herein described trunk, comprising an outer casing having integral Hoor, back and ends, said ends having backwardly extending grooves continuous from front to back in their upper extremities, a front hinged to and detachable from said floor to swing outwardly and down, protecting bands secured to the upper portions of said ends having inturned flanges over said ends extending continuously from front to back of the casing to reinforce the material above the upper sides of said continuous grooves, a top comprising a plurality of sections hinged together and slidably disposed in said grooves to move backwardly with one of said sections dropping at the rear of said casing, a hinged hasp for securing said front and cover together in closed position, a protecting band extending Vcontinuously around the edge of said front and having an inturned flange on its upper edge below which the front edge of the front section of said top is seated when the trunk is closed, a tier of drawers slidably disposed within said casing to move forwardly therein and adapted to be held closed by said front, and a receptacle in the top of said casing above said drawers adapted to be closed by said cover.
In testimony whereot1 I have signed my name to this specification.
SAMUEL C. I-IORTON.
